milliways_bar: Journal Entry #3

April 21, 1921:

This entry shall be swift and concise if it is at all possible. Since September I have been working quite hard with 'Winnie' and the rest of the Colonial office. During the beginning of March we finally arrived at our goal - The Cairo Conference.

It went far better than I expected, honestly. Feisal has been appointed the King of Iraq and his brother, who is equally as sensible and interesting, Abdullah, has been crowned the King of the newly formed Trans-Jordan. Finally, an acceptable resolution for the Arabs. It is of course not completely what was wished for, but it is tolerable at any rate and Feisal is completely ecstatic about this development...as am I. It feels finally like I have not failed my nation entirely. I hope that things shall only improve from here, which seems quite likely considering Churchill's attitudes. It is encouraging in the least and exhilarating at most.

I have taken back to wearing British issue Militia clothing once again. It is not so bad - although I do still have problems keeping my shirt correctly buttoned and I forget constantly about the Sam Browne belt - it's so pointless, after all. And the militia has taken to trying to tell me what I shall and shall not do once again - it is quite irritating, but they are more often than not silenced by a few witty remarks. 'Disrespect', Allenby had called it. But if they are out of their jurisdiction, I feel it is my duty to point out such things. Life is, at any rate, going more smoothly than the last year.

I've been observing Feisal from a distance and have contacted Ali briefly - the two are very insistent that I design the stamps once again for the Iraqi nation after seeing the work I did for the Grande Sharif of Mecca. It is quite exciting, I think. I've purchased with some small amount of pocket money a newer motorcycle and have been spending quite a lot of time riding. I think that I shall go out for a ride now, in fact. It's a simple pleasure I feel I can indulge in more often.

journal, oom
