I was reading through a forum thread which was all about what Doctor Who Quotes people would like on T-Shirts (I think it was on TV.com, but I'm not sure) and I've decided that the quote I want on a shirt would be:

"Yes, thank you Luke"
and then in teeny, tiny text underneath the bottom of that, it would say:
"Smartass"

And then I came across Sarah and Four's conversation in 'Genesis of the Daleks'.
I haven't seen that episode in about eight years now, but I remember the last time I watched it, long before New!Who, and even then, I told Four he was being an idiot.

Doctor: "Do I have the right? Simply touch one wire against the other and that's it. The Daleks cease to exist. Hundreds of
millions of people, thousands of generations can live without fear... in peace, and never even know the word "Dalek". "
I wonder if Ten would still say the same thing. I mean, he was ticked off with Handy for killing all the Daleks, but you've got to wonder, if Four had known about the Time War, or even the possibility of the Time War, would he have let the Daleks live so easily.
Letting the Daleks live was about having the moral high ground. Four couldn't do it because then "I'd be no better than the Daleks." So it was about his pride and his morals, he wouldn't sink to the level of the Daleks, so he let them live, simply because he was better than them.
Now, to the best of my recollection, at that point, the Time Lords and the Daleks had never really faced each other, not in a way that really affected the Time Lords in any sense.
What I'm trying to get at, was that Four was talking about other planets living in fear, other people dying and suffering at the hands of the Daleks. It wasn't the Time Lords at the time who were suffering, but the humans spread out across Time and the Galaxy.
Four could afford moral high ground because his people weren't the ones in trouble. When it isn't your species being killed, its a lot easier to turn the other cheek.
I trully believe, if he'd known, then an there, that Gallifrey would burn because of the Daleks, that he wouldn't have taken the moral high road. I can't see the Doctor wiping the Daleks out, but at the same time, I don't think he would have let the Time War start if he'd known about it.
Just goes to show you, that even in fictional universes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions

Man, I am totally ticked off with Four right now (as I was ticked off with him last time I watched Genisis). He should have maned up and dealt with the Daleks when he could have, at least then Gallifrey would still be around and we might get to see it in an age when computer generated images would be able to make a Gallifrey worth looking at.
Damn you Four, your stuborness and moral superiority has cost me the pretties.
