Al's Last Stand

I've been working through re-acquiring the PLD AF set, so I can get it stored. Last night after Nyzul I had a block of time free and I had read that you could sneak-pull just the one Orc NM that drops the Well Weight for the Gallant Surcoat quest. I feel like I'm taking up people's time if I ask for help with stuff like this, so I decided to give it a go solo, after reading about the sneak-pull method. I headed out on PLD/NIN, which I still don't particularly like for party or event situations in most cases. It definitely has the highest survivability among the jobs I have at 75, though.

After arriving at the village in Davoi that has the well, I started clearing Orcs in the back area, near the well. This took longer than I would have liked, but also gave me a good guage of what difficulties to expect from the surrounding mobs in case I got a link when I popped the NMs. Finally with what I thought was enough space clear, I put up sneak, edged towards the well and clicked. Just as I clicked the ??? an Orc I hadn't seen stepped out from behind a tent across the well.

At that point, a lot of things happened quickly, so I'm not certain of the exact sequence of events. When the Orc stepped out, I stopped for just a second, because he was in the area I was supposed to circle around to after the pop, to try and pull only One-Eyed Gwajboj. Somehow-fortunately for me-I ended up with just Gwajboj and the regular Orc.

Pulling them away from the well, I started the battle. I focused on the NM and ignored the regular Orc for the most part, because I was somewhat worried Gwajboj might despawn if I let him go unclaimed to deal with the link. It wasn't long into the fight when I saw: The Thunder Elemental starts casting Enthunder in the chat log. I quickly moved the fight away from it and continued, but even with Atonement hitting Gwajboj nicely it was still going to be a long fight.

Long enough in fact, that I got a second link from a re-pop. It was a Farkiller so he just stayed off at a distance doing ranged attacks. I ignored him as well and continued with Gwajboj. When he used Invincible I switched to the nearby linked orc to be able to continue building TP. Aside from feeding Gwajboj Atonements, I was also using it for Chivalry as needed. Chivalry, I have to say... It's just crazy how good it is @ a recast of 10:00.

A third orc linked just before I finally knocked down Gwajboj and got my Well Weight, and I was starting to get into other repops as well. As I worked through one, it seemed like another would pop and wander over into linking range. It was definitely thanks to Chivalry that I was able to keep upright through all the links, and really kind of amazing -to me- that I did survive. I know it is now a long time ago, but I remember well back in the day, getting together a larger group to be able to clear the area, handle links, and get this fight done. It was actually a lot of fun and felt rewarding getting the surcoat again, after fighting through all that. I wish I had some screenshots but I was busy enough managing MP & JAs that I didn't want to turn off the overlay and try to take shots.
