Talking about my Touch

Which I really have not done.

Unless you have one, or are looking to get one and have seen all of the videos, a bunch of this will make no sense. Sorry.

I no longer lave the latest, but I still have the greatest, kindof. The Touch is an amazing toy and a useful tool, as well. I use it daily, and as much more than a music player. I use the calender feature as my daily planner, and now that the Touch has a notes feature it has become a fully functional PDA. I also make heavy use of the photo album. I carry my 500 favorite photos with me wherever I go, and I pity the person who asks if I have pictures of my child!

I have the 16 Gig Touch. I bought it at the end of November after hearing that the repair on my old iPod would cost $160. I loved the old one but it made no sense to repair it when the cost could buy a new Nano or get me halfway to the Touch. I almost went for the Nano, just because it is so small and sweet, but the tools on the Touch won me over.

I moved from a 60 Gig machine to a 16 Gig with ease. I have more than 40 Gigs of music and over 30 Gigs of video stored on my computer, but I connect the iPod to the computer every day, so I simply swap playlists on and off as I go. I spend most of my time listening to audiobooks and podcasts, so the music I carry with me is just the icing on the cake.

I have a lot of playlists. Any album that I might listen to in it's entirety has it's own list. I also have a list for each genre, as it is easier for me to deal with them in a playlist than as a "sort by" listing. I also make a playlist for any audiobook I upload from disks (rather than download from Audible.com). My trick for audiobooks is to delete the tracks from the playlist as I go. My view includes the last played field, so I am able to keep track.  This opens up space and makes listening to audiobooks easier in general.

There are a few things I do not like about this iPod. I actually don't like the "Cover Flow" application, and would love to be able to turn it off. It slows me down, and I just don't use it. I have to remember to use the sleep button quickly, before it switches, or it just takes too long when I need to change tracks or volume. Speaking of volume, I really wish there was an easier way to either adjust the volume or pause play. I have discovered a wonderful trick. Pushing the "home" button twice (very quickly) will bring up a volume control screen as long as you are using the vertical orientation. This works even if the screen is locked, and you will be able to keep everything locked. This will not work if you are locked horizontally. Which is why I wish I could turn that off.

And that's about it.  I have used an iPod every day for the past three years.  The guys each have one as well, but I am the main user in the house.  I purchased my MacBook based largely on how much I have enjoyed using the iPod.  A friend of mine joked that my computer is simply a bigger, harder to use iPod, and now that I have the Touch I have to agree.  I would not suggest a Mac for everyone, but it suits me well enough.

My old iPod now sits in a place of honor. It is officially our home stereo, as it still works when connected to a docking system. We use it every day.  We also have a shuffle, our first attempt to get the boy to let me use my own toy.  He now has a 30 Gig Video, but asks for mine whenever he can.  He loves his, but tells me that mine is just cooler.  I have to agree!
