So I went through the newest edition of Vogue today, the one with Michelle Obama on the cover.
By my count there are 336 pages devoted solely and presented explicitly as advertising space. This does not include the fold-out ad on the reverse side of the cover.
There are 171 pages of writing, articles, and fashion spreads. And we all know fashion spreads are just a way of legitimizing advertising certain brands.
The sad thing is that all of the articles this month are about women with power - Michelle Obama, Queen Rania of Jordan, Melinda Gates, even Stephenie Meyer for crying out loud!
How sad that, as the article on Queen Rania points out, 41 million girls around the world get no education at all. And yet here we are in North America, where so many girls (and boys) could still do with a solid briefing on how advertisers are constantly battling for their dollars
