Okay that's not actually what this post is for. Though I was going to post that anyway FOR THE LULZ. This is a headcanon meme thing BECAUSE I LOVE THOSE \o/ I don't have like, extensive headcanon yet, but I wanted to make a note of some things. Most of it is related to Envy's body and body image and gender and sex because--he's special. BUT if anyone has headcanon questions etc. too, feel free to ask! It's a QUESTIONS MEME AND A LIST-THING all in one. Also sort of an essay because I just kind of kept talking. So.
This is all headcanon! None of this is explicit in the manga but none of it is explicitly untrue either, afaik. IF I AM WRONG, LET ME KNOW. Also some spoilers in here for uh, chapters in the 70s, iirc. (Edited on 8/31 to reflect NEW INFO I fail)
» Envy identifies as male! Slightly! He doesn't identify strongly as male, and if you mistake him for a woman, he won't be offended.
» Father is male, and Father is male because Hohenheim is male. THIS IS MY ASSUMPTION, anyway. Father was made using Hohenheim's blood and his body was modeled after Hohenheim's, and this is why he's a dude, not because there is anything inherently male about homunculi or because the king wanted him to be. And the current set of homunculi represents Father's own sins/personality traits, which is why they're all male but Lust, who is different because she's a sexual representation (presumably Father's idea of an attractive woman or something along those lines). The others are all male to varying stereotypical degrees, Envy and Pride the least so. The part he represents is not overwhelmingly masculine, and neither is Envy. He envies both men and women, after all, and envy is traditionally both a male and a female trait.
» He prefers to be pretty and androgynous and cute because his true form is SO UGLY, and he hates it, and he wants to be--the opposite of that! He's very small, 5'3" or so, because his monster form is so huge and uncute. And being a "pretty" boy makes him attractive in a way that's more accessible to people of both genders. It also makes him a rival in looks for both men and women; he envies the looks of both sexes, so the body he prefers is a good way to incorporate both sets of traits.
» Envy's PHYSICAL SEX is neuter. His frame is male, with narrow hips, no breasts, male musculature, etc. But he is not usually truly male, BY WHICH I MEAN that he doesn't bother giving himself external genitals unless it's necessary. Having a penis is a pain because it gets in the way and feels awkward (those bike short things are tight!) and presents a target to an enemy in a fight, and he has no desire to ever use it for sex, so why bother? Also, dicks aren't cute. :|
» The skort does a REALLY GOOD JOB of hiding the fact that it's not always there.
» The homunculi do eat and drink, though, so he'll give himself one when he needs to pee.
» Envy's not a virgin, but he's never had sex as "Envy." He's only had sex while disguised as other people, for purposes of deception or ruining someone or emotionally scarring them. He's had sex both as a man and as a woman and he's not fond of either, but he prefers it as a man and on top because the position of power over someone else and the ability to cause them pain with the act is the only thing he finds all that pleasurable about it. This is another reason why he identifies slightly as male.
» Envy likes human bodies and finds them aesthetically attractive and comfortable to move around in. He's envious of humans for having them. :| He's asexual, though, and doesn't find them attractive sexually . . . ever, really.
» Every single person Envy talks to gets physically scrutinized in case Envy ever wants or needs to take on their form. He's really good at doing this without being obvious. He's also good at identifying traps, because he looks very closely at body shape, lack of Adam's apple, facial bone structure, and so on. He will not be fooled by clothing alone when it comes to gender.
» He's never figured out, though, that every human has a different set of fingerprints. His are always the same, no matter who he's impersonating. Originally he didn't have any at all, until he closely inspected the body of someone he killed once upon a time and noticed them. His fingerprints match those of that victim.
» He can eat and drink, but he doesn't need to to survive and doesn't get uncomfortable if he doesn't. We don't get any canon on this for the homunculi, with the obvious exception of Gluttony, but we see Lust with a drink once (and I assume she's drinking it because it would be very conspicuous to order it and then not touch it), so they must be ABLE to eat and drink, at least. The reason I assume Envy doesn't NEED to eat is that Envy is actually very, very big, and he would need a lot of food to sustain himself, yet we never see him eating or mentioning being hungry. All of Father's hunger went to Gluttony, apparently.
» Similarly, he can and does sleep, but he doesn't need as much of it as a human would. It's just refreshing! Usually when he sleeps it's in animal form, because he doesn't have a cabin, so he stays outside and naps in the woods as a wolf or something along those lines.
» HEADCANON CARRIED OVER FROM WHEN I USED TO PLAY GREED: he doesn't/can't dream, at least not in sensations or images. His dreams go about as far as having angry/envious/murderous urges during sleep, on a very basic animal-brain level with no pictures or stories or thoughts.
» Envy can turn into anything he wants, but if he takes on the form of a bird or something, he can't fly, because he's too heavy. (We never see him do it in the manga, even when it would be the logical choice.) He also has more trouble getting around the smaller he becomes, also due to his weight. He's not likely to ever turn into a mouse or a bug or anything because of how it's conserved; generally Envy doesn't go any smaller than a medium-large dog.
» This doesn't apply to his fetusEnvy form, because in that form he's NOT heavy, all the souls having been stripped out of his Philosopher's Stone. Likewise in that form he will still appear "off" and monstrous and WRONG to those who can sense souls, but he WON'T appear to be "full of people," the way he does in his normal and monster forms.
» His clothes are actually a part of his body. They don't feel like skin or anything, they really are made of cloth and all, but they're stuck to him, and he can't take them off by normal means. Wearing "real" clothing is weird for him.
