I am working on my first piece of actual Journalism right now, and it is interesting. The assignment is simply a 500 - 800 word article on the caretakers of the Hambletonian horses. I have a solid half hour of interviews that consist mainly of the interviewees explaining their inability to speak English, or me explaining my inability to understand harness racing. Draft due on Wednesday.
But I've actually learned a few things about becoming a journalist, the main idea being You Will Start Small. Most professionals seem to advise that the would-bes offer to freelance for free just to get feet in the door. I think I can do that.
