Too late to say sorry - Part 13

“Sophie” Sian squeaked seeing her eyes open and looking at her, Sian didn’t want to raise her hopes that she knew her, she needed her to say she knew her before believing it. “Oh my god, Sophie its Rosie can you hear me?” she yelled as if Sophie was deaf, Sophie diverted her eyes to her sister for a brief moment and nodded then she returned her gaze to Sian. Rosie ran out of the room, “She’s awake, she’s awake” she yelled running past doctors who went straight in to Sophie, Rosie ran past them and in to the relatives room, “She’s awake” Rosie panted, “Sophie’s awake”.

Immediately Sally and Kevin ran following Rosie to their youngest daughter’s bed. Sophie was now looking around the room “Sophie” Sally cried kissing her forehead, “Okay can you all leave for a moment please” the doctor asked “ We need to remove her breathing tube and it will be a little unpleasant, the Webster’s began to leave, Sian went to follow them, but Sophie grabbed her hand and shook her head. “Okay Soph, I’m right here” Sian said as the doctor turned off the oxygen machine and removed the tube from her trachea. Sophie began to cough and retch, a nurse fetched a cardboard kidney dish in case she vomited, after a moment she lay back and Sian passed her a straw while holding a glass of water.

“Sips only” the doctor said before checking and updating her chart, “Hourly obs now nurse” he said before waiting for Sophie to compose herself so he could test her reflexes and her memory. The family were allowed back in, Becky gave her best wishes before catching a taxi back to Weatherfield.

“So Sophie, you gave us a scare then, how are you feeling?” the doctor asked “In pain” Sophie croaked, “Where?” he asked, she pointed to her throat and back, “Okay well you will have a sore throat for a few days because of the tube in your throat, “Can you tell me what you remember?” Sophie thought for a second, “I remember falling and then everything went black” the doctor nodded “Anything else, do you know who these people are?” he said pointing towards her family.

“That’s my mum Sally, dad Kevin, big sister Rosie, and that beautiful woman there is my girlfriend Sian”. Sian’s face lit up, “You remember” she breathed tearily “I can’t believe I ever forgot” Sophie smiled their eyes locked, the doctor coughed “Well good, good, now Sophie as you landed on your back I am going to test your reflexes, just a precaution you understand” he said pulling out a small pin, he ran it over Sophie’s hands, she reacted then her stomach, “Okay Sophie you are doing well, grasp my fingers” Sophie grabbed his fingers tightly “Excellent” he said, then he ran the pin over her feet, no reaction. The doctor furrowed his brow not un-noticed by Sian “Is everything okay?” she asked panicking.

The doctor ignored her question, “Sophie push against my hands with your feet” he asked, no movement, “Again” he asked again nothing, “Sophie you’re doing very well, just wiggle your toes” Sian’s eyes watched as Sophie’s toes didn’t move”. The doctor made a note, “Okay Sophie well done”. Sophie smiled and yawned, “Soph I’ll be back in a minute” Sian said following the doctor out of the room.

“Excuse me” she asked when everyone else was out of earshot “Sophie’s tests, her toes she didn’t move them, what does it mean?” The doctor looked at her “I’m afraid I can’t tell you anymore until I have spoken to Sophie”. Sian’s face fell, “Please sir, please if there’s anything wrong let me tell her, please why can’t she wiggle her toes?”.

The doctor looked her directly in the eyes “It appears that Sophie had spinal damage caused from the fall, we won’t know if it’s permanent or not until we do more tests”. Sian choked back a sob, “But it could be, she may not walk again” The doctor nodded “There is a chance yes I’m sorry”. Sian turned to go back in the room, Rosie was stood there mouth open “Did he say she won’t walk again?” she asked loudly.
A nurse opened the door at that second, allowing Sophie and her parents to hear what Rosie had asked.
