Too late to say sorry - Part 3
Sally was sat at the table desperately trying to work out how she could work, pay for a flat and the bills, a call broke the silence and the migraine that was beginning to develop. “Hello” she said yawning, “Oh no, when? Where is she? How bad?”. Getting her answers she scrawled a message on a piece of paper and left it in the table hoping that Kevin would see it, she slammed the door and started the car, roaring off up the road she remembered that she hadn’t told Rosie, she slammed her brakes on nearly causing a collision with a learner driver who was following behind her. Sally’s hands shook as she dialled her number.
Rosie was lying on Jason on the sofa, she had just talked her way through Eileen’s favourite films and she was annoyed, suddenly her phone buzzing broke her trail of thought, seeing her Mother’s name she was going to reject the call, however Eileen’s favourite soap would be on in a minute, she didn’t want to miss that, taking the hint of Eileen’s scowling Rosie answered the call then screamed.
“Jason we gotta go , now” she yelled crying, Sean not one to gossip of course wanted to know what was wrong “Rosie is it bad news?” he asked, “It’s Sophie, she’s fallen off a roof or summit, she’s in intensive care”. Eileen’s face softened and she hugged her, some things are more important than tv, she thought. Jason grabbed his keys reassuring Eileen that he’d call her with any news.
Eileen liked Sophie and had bonded well with her on the night that Sian and her had stayed over after being ‘caught’, she prayed that Sophie would be okay as she heard Jason’s van screech away.
Running through the hospital entrance Rosie saw Sally tearful being spoken to by a doctor, seeing Rosie she ran over to her and held her as if her life depended on it. They sat down while Jason excused himself to get them drinks, he didn’t know how to help apart from to do something hands on.
“What happened?” Rosie asked handing her mother tissues. “The pastor said Sophie got drunk, ran up to the church roof and fell” Sally began to cry “What the doctor say?” Rosie asked, “Sophie’s broken her arm, and a few ribs, apparently the drink saved her life, as she was relaxed when she hit the parked car below her body impacted softer, he said if she was sober then..it would have been fatal” Sally cried harder. As Jason approached them with drinks they saw the pastor. “Pastor, why was Sophie on the roof?” Rosie asked, he shuffled his feet “She was drunk, yelled out to the choir about her sexuality, then ran to the roof”. Rosie saw him divert his eyes “What aren’t you telling us?” she asked, he paused for a moment “The choir were shocked okay at her outburst, her deliration of being gay and they..well they laughed, I chased after Sophie, but it was too late”.
Sally tried to take in the events, “Afterwards, when you saw her fall, did she move? Did she say anything?”. The pastor nodded, “Well what did she say?”. He looked at her going against his own beliefs, “I ran down to her, she was bleeding, I phoned for an ambulance, and waited with her, she mumbled something then fell unconscious.
Rosie was annoyed “For god’s sake, what did she say?” she begged. He sighed she said “Sian”. Sally looked at Rosie, “That was it, she said Sian?” The pastor nodded.
“Oh god” Sally said out loud, “Sian, I haven’t told her, oh Rosie please. She was on holiday, but she may be back, oh god phone her”. Rosie dialled the number, it rang, she tried again and again.
After a few hours her phone rang, Rosie went to answer it, but it went off, she saw the disapproving looks from the staff and shuffled out in to the cold morning air, redialling Sian she waited for an answer, “Sian’ it’s Rosie, Sophie’s hurt, she’s in hospital, you must come now, NOW!” she yelled. Rosie looked up to the sun hiding behind grey clouds and prayed that her sister would get to see another day.
