Dr. Seuss was THE children's author in the US for pretty much the entire 20th century and his books continue to live on. He specialised in simple repetitive rhymes using a small vocabulary. This was determined to be an effective way to teach young children to read. Despite the limited vocabulary his stories were highly engaging due to their imagination, fun, high energy, and silly illustrations (that he also drew in his signature style).

EVERYONE in the US knows Dr. Seuss. I don't think it would occur to anyone to put him on a name-recognition survey because I don't think it would occur to anyone that someone didn't know him (in the US. I don't know about other English-speaking countries. Also don't know if he was translated successfully to other languages).
