And, thankfully, being near Alex so much has made me forget and heal. The therapy helps too. That's one thing that has changed. I talk to a shrink once a week, and surprisingly, it helps wonders after a while of going to the sessions.
So, it's when I get a call from the hospital that my mom has gone into labor that reality finally hits me. I do the only thing that seems remotely rational: I panic.
Alex drives me to the hospital. The entire way I am moving around in my seat too much and biting at my nails. I'm a total mess by the time we get there.
Once inside, I get redirected to the maternity ward. I ask for any news on her or the baby from the nurse at the desk. She just tells us to wait in the waiting room. I have no problem with that, to be honest. I don't want to be apart of the birth, so I sit in a chair and finally relax a bit. Alex sits down next to me. There are a few other people here as well. There's no doubt they are for a similar reason. Alex grabs my hand and holds it.
"Have you met up with the adoption parents yet?" Alex asks.
I shake my head. "No, but they were supposed to be notified when I was. I was told of their backgrounds and their living status. I'm very satisfied. I've already signed the adoption papers and everything."
"That's good. The kid does deserve a good life. Are you going to meet them?" Alex asks.
"Probably."
A female doctor comes into the waiting room. Everyone looks up.
"Barakat?" the doctor asks looking into the room.
I stand up and turn my attention to her.
"How is everything?" I ask.
"The baby and mother are fine. You have a healthy baby sister."
I nod. "That's- that's good to hear."
"Would you like to see her?" the doctor asks.
"Um...sure," I say a bit hesitantly.
The doctor leads me into the maternity ward. I quickly motion for helping Alex to follow and he does. We go to the nursery where all of the babies are looked after. I am allowed to go inside. I stop in front of the little bed that has a card that reads "Barakat". A little baby girl is in there sleeping. It's almost unbelievable.
"Would you like to hold her?" the nurse asks.
"I'm able to?" I ask.
"You're family, correct?"
"Yes."
"Then you may. Have you held a baby before?" she asks.
"Not one this young."
"Well, the most important thing to know is to always support her head."
She picks up the baby and carefully hands her to me. I cradle the little girl in my arms. She starts to wake up. Her eyes are a gray-ish color, but they will probably change to a brown like mine as she gets older.
"Wow..." I hear Alex says. "She looks a lot like you."
"Really?" I say.
"Yeah."
"Good."
We hear a knock on the window. I turn and see a young looking couple looking at us. They must be the ones that are going to be adopting her. I hand the baby back to the nurse and leave the room. I walk up to the couple.
"Hi. I'm Jack Barakat," I say softly.
"Hi! It's nice to finally meet you. My wife and I are so grateful for this opportunity. We aren't able to have kids of our own," the man says.
"Well, as long as you can provide her with a happy childhood, then I know I'm doing the right thing. I didn't give her a name, so I'll leave that to you."
The woman actually hugs me. "Thank you! We promise to take care of her to our best abilities."
I nod. "Then I'll leave you to it."
I say good bye to them before heading back to the little girl. I pick her up again and just hold her.
"I'm doing the right thing by giving you up. I'm sorry I'm too young, but I can't do this. You are going to have a nice mommy and daddy though. They will love you. So, I guess this goodbye. Maybe I'll see you again when you are old enough to understand why I did this."
I give her a kiss and put her back down. Alex greets me and hugs me tightly. He doesn't say anything, which I am very grateful for. We head out of the hospital and back to the car.
"You okay?" Alex asks softly.
I just nod my head and smile. I really am okay. I feel as though I really can move on from all of this now.
"That's good. They seemed like really nice, good people. They have a few animals the baby can play with as she gets older and they both come from large families. They decided on Jacklyn for her name, by the way."
"Really? That was nice of them. They told you this?"
"Yeah. While you were in there with her saying bye."
"I'm doing the right thing, right?" I ask.
"Does it feel right?" Alex replies.
"Yes."
"Then it most likely is. You did the best anyone else could, given your situation."
I accept that answer easily. I just need to know someone else's point of view of things. But I do know it's going to all be okay now.
