Six o’clock came way to early. I never really understood why school had to start so early but I didn’t make the rules so… I climbed out of bed and got ready. I put on my usual clothes, that I hoped were clean, and went to the kitchen to eat breakfast. It was pouring outside so I had to run to my car so I didn’t get wet. I backed out of my driveway and cautiously drove to school. I hated driving in the rain. Operating a car was nerve racking enough without huge drops of water falling from the sky. I was greeted by Rian when I walked into the school. He was all excited and I knew something interesting was going on. “There’s a new kid!” School hadn’t even started yet and Rian already knew that. I never really knew how but Rian was in the loop about everything. Like he was a magical being or something. It was crazy. “Cool and I care because…” I never really cared about the stuff Rian told me because it really had no effect on my life. “I don’t know I just wanted to say it.” It was too early and Rian was too hyper. When I got to my first class I sat in my seat undetected, but that wasn’t anything unusual. The bell rang and I already wasn’t paying attention. I was doodling something on my notebook while my teacher was cracking some stupid joke like he always did. After one of his particularly dumb jokes I heard someone laugh. After I heard that giggle I knew that it was the “new” kid for two reasons. For one no one ever laughed at the teachers’ jokes, they were stupid and monotonous. For two I had heard that laugh before from only one other person. It was a very specific laugh that no one could copy. That laugh belonged to one Alex Gaskarth. My thoughts were confirmed when the teacher introduced him and when I saw him I could tell it was actually him. There were the natural differences that come with growing up. He was taller of course and a lot less scrawny. His hair was longer and more disheveled, he really worked the just out of bed look, and his sense of style was very different. Among those differences though, were things that made him distinctly Alex. His eyes were still big and brown, he still bit his lip like he was kind of nervous, and he tapped his hand against his leg like he used to. The teacher told him to take a seat. You know those movies where the new kid sits next to the shy kid, it never fails to happen. Well that’s how this situation played out. I watched him walk down the row of desks to the one right next to mine. He hadn’t seemed to notice me, I didn’t expect he would. “Hey I’m Alex!” He was quite chipper. “I’m Jack.” I gave him a smile but felt really weird introducing myself to someone I knew so well years ago. “Cool I had a friend named Jack when I was little, he was really dorky!” Wow so not only did he not recognize me he thought I was dorky when I was little. This whole sitting next to Alex thing was gonna be real fun! I am quite fluent in sarcasm. The rest of the day went off without a hitch. Alex wasn’t in any of my other classes so I didn’t have to worry about him and there wasn’t any homework to waste my time.
My home routine tended to be the same, everyday. My mom always asked me how my day was and then I hung out in my room. It happened everyday! “I’m home!” “How was your day?!” I had a feeling today’s routine was going to be a little different. “Good. Um… Alex is back.” My mom appeared from around the corner. “You mean The Alex that moved to England ten years ago? Did he remember you?” There was no need to make her feel bad for me. “Yeah that’s the one and uh yeah he remembered me.” That was probably the biggest lie I ever told her. “That’s nice sweetie.” I walked up to my room and took out my notebook. I didn’t have homework but I did have a test. A test that if I failed my mom would take my iPod away and I could not handle that. I realized fairly quickly that I hadn’t taken any notes though. I had doodled all over the pages. Those stupid doodles, now I couldn’t study and I was thinking about… Alex? Shit I had written Alex’s name all over my notebook. Okay so I guess it’s about time to confess that I am in love with Alex Gaskarth. I had realized that a while ago. Yes I fell in love with a guy that left me tens years ago but I couldn’t help it. I could never imagine myself with anyone but him. Believe me I tried and failed miserably. Him being back just made all feelings I had go crazy. I ended up spending my night thinking up ways to talk to Alex and getting him to remember me. Now that he was back it was going to kill me not to talk to him. I was definitely gonna need Rian’s help with this.
