Jack's eyes opened slowly, eventually revealing a dark room.
His eyes trailed to the clock; 4:06 am.
He blinked a few times, before looking down.
Alex was draped across his chest, his arm around his waist, and holding him close. His breathing was slow, and every so often, he nuzzled his head into Jack's chest.
Jack's arm was wrapped tightly around Alex's shoulders, holding him closer.
Jack closed his eyes, and shifted his torso, moving to a more comfortable position.
Alex stirred a little, moving his head to look up at Jack. They made eye contact, and even in the darkness, Jack could see something glimmer in Alex's eyes. Something he was sure he had seen there before, but never really registered.
Jack smiled, and shifted his hand, to stroke Alex's hair out of his face.
The boys lay in silence, not needing to talk. Jack could sense he needed to say something, and Alex was silently patient, waiting like a flower for spring. But he was sure that what he was waiting for would feel like winter.
He sat up, sliding up the bed, not losing contact with Jack. He was level with Jack when he stopped, and he lifted his head as Jack moved his arm. They were still touching, and Alex looked into Jack's eyes. No words were passed, but Jack knew it was time to come clean.
"I... I'm ill," he said. And just like that, he was free of his secret.
"Everyone gets ill, Jack," Alex laughed, slightly relieved.
"No, Alex... I'm... ill. I'm not... I'm not getting better," he whispered, slipping his hand into Alex's.
Alex held onto Jack's hand, and closed his eyes. Jack's not going to get better.
Jack's going to be gone in... gone in...
He forced himself to ask the question, but he didn't quite make it.
"How long.... until..." He didn't need to finish.
"One month."
Silence followed this shock revelation.
And the shock was setting in for both boys.
Jack realised he didn't have very long, and the tears that filled his eyes were soon spilling over.
Alex squeezed Jack's hand, already missing the warmth in his palm.
He heard a sob, and turned to his best friend. The tears that flowed down the man's face made Alex's own eyes fill with tears.
"It'll be okay," he whispered, leaning closer to Jack, and leaning on his shoulder, knowing deep in his heart, everything was far from okay.
