They were a classic pairing. Alex was the cliché country boy who wore jeans and worked as a vet; Jack was the cliché city boy who wore a suit to his office job every day. Alex lived in a small house in the countryside; Jack lived in an apartment surrounded by buildings. Alex loved the outdoors, and Jack loved the indoors. You would never have put the two of them together- and that probably was the reason they loved each other so much. They always had, and, as newlyweds, they always would.

Their interests were opposites. Alex loved hiking and fishing, and Jack loved going to fancy restaurants and the theater. Even though it wasn’t like him, Alex enjoyed dressing up with Jack and being fancy. But Jack wasn’t as eager to join Alex in his interests- he wasn’t exactly fond of the things that came with the outdoors.

On this particular morning in July, Alex was pestering a hesitant Jack to go camping with him.

“Please Jack, please please please?”

The younger sighed. “I dunno, Alex.”

“Why not?” Alex questioned, sitting on the couch next to Jack.

“I dunno, Alex,” he repeated, smirking a little.

“Come on,” Alex whined. He scooted closer, sandwiching himself against Jack’s side. “You’ll have fun, I promise. I know this really remote place out by Thompson Lake, it’s absolutely beautiful. And I already have everything ready. You won’t have to do a thing, except sit and look pretty.”

Jack laughed and hugged Alex even closer. “Alright, I’ll go.”

“Good!” Alex exclaimed, kissing his husband on the cheek. He jumped up and started towards the door. “Meet me at the car in 10 minutes.”

15 minutes later, the two were packed into Alex’s jeep with everything they’d need for the night, Alex singing along to the Green Day playing on the radio. If there was one thing they had in common, it was their music taste.

“So how far away is this place?” Jack asked.

“I’m afraid we might be driving for a lot of the day,” Alex said, drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. Jack couldn’t help but notice how desirable he looked in his red plaid shirt, one hand laid casually on the wheel. He started to get lost in his thoughts, but abruptly snapped back to attention when Alex spoke again. “But we should be there in time to pitch the tent before dark.”

“Sounds good,” Jack sighed, stretching out in his seat. Car rides with Alex were familiar and comfortable. The two would often just jump in Alex’s jeep and drive wherever when they were bored on the weekend.

“Hey, Jack?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks for coming with me,” Alex said. “I know you’re not really fond of this kind of stuff, but you know.”

Jack averted his gaze from the passing scenery for a moment, smiling at Alex. “It’s no problem, babe.”

“Seriously,” Alex murmured. He reached over and tousled Jack’s already-messy black hair. “Thanks.”

3 ½ hours later, the two had arrived at the campsite. Just as Alex had promised, it was absolutely beautiful. There was a little clearing overlooking the lake where the tent was to be, equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit. A narrow path lead down to a small beach, where the water lapped gently against the sand. The whole area was surrounded by forest.

Jack stood at the top of the path, admiring the view. The lake gazed back, steady and peaceful.

“How did you ever find this place?” he called back to Alex, who was up by the jeep, wrestling with tent poles.

“A client at work owns it,” Alex called back. “He didn’t have enough cash to meet his bill after I operated on his dog, so he made up for it by giving me permission to use his private spot. His cabin is actually down the road a little.”

Jack nodded, shoving his hands in his pockets. “That’s really great of you, to do that for him.”

“It was no big deal.”

That was just how Alex was. If a client didn’t have enough money to pay their bill, Alex would find ways to help them out. Whether it was little favors, or small procedures left out of the cost, he always made sure their pet got better.

“Hey Jack, I know I said you didn’t have to do anything but look pretty, but could you come hold this for me?”

And Jack obliged, because that was just how he was.

After the tent was set up and the fire started, Jack went hunting for the perfect marshmallow-roasting stick. Alex was flitting around the campsite, trying to get everything organized for dinner before it got dark. The sun was already creeping down behind the trees, bathing everything in a deep, orange, summery glow.

Jack was inspecting a tree branch when Alex called out that dinner was ready. He made a mental note of his place, and trotted back to the table where Alex had their meal all laid out. Grilled chicken, potato salad, carrots and dip, with chocolate chip cookies for dessert, Jack’s favorite.

“It all looks delicious, babe,” Jack grinned, sitting down at the picnic table.

“The perfect camping meal,” Alex replied, sitting down across from Jack. He raised his glass of wine. “To enjoying nature, even when you don’t want to.”

Jack stuck his tongue out at his cheeky husband, and promptly dug in.

“Oh my god,” he said with his mouth full. “This is delicious.”

“Thank you.”

“Seriously. You can cook, you can survive in the wild, what can’t you do?”

“I have yet to find out,” Alex joked.

The sun went down before they finished dinner. Alex excused himself to light the lantern and put a new log on the fire, and Jack decided he was too full to continue anyways.

“Wanna go stargaze down on the sand?” Alex suggested.

Jack agreed, grabbing a blanket and taking Alex’s hand.

Down by the lake, Jack spread out the blanket a safe distance from the water. Alex lay down first, crossing one of his arms behind his head. Jack curled up next to him, occupying his other arm. The sand wasn’t the most comfortable mattress, but he was with Alex, and the sky was perfectly clear. Things couldn’t have gotten any more perfect.

“See right there, that line of stars?” Alex pointed out quietly. Jack nodded. “That’s Orion’s Belt.”

Alex pointed out constellation after constellation as Jack watched him instead of the sky. He loved how he could see the starlight reflect off Alex’s eyes, and how happy he looked as he introduced each one to Jack, asking him if he thought they were pretty.

Stars are pretty, but you’re beautiful, Jack thought. He didn’t notice that Alex was looking at him now rather than the sky.

“What are you thinking, Jack?” he murmured.

“Just how much I love you,” Jack answered quietly.

Alex’s lips curled up slowly, showing just a bit of teeth. He pulled Jack in closer. “I love you too, darling.”

They sat in comfortable silence for a little while, just admiring the night sky. Until Jack thought of a brilliant idea.

“’Lex,” Jack whispered.

“Yeah?”

“Wanna go skinny dipping?”

Alex laughed. “You’re crazy, Jack.”

“Why? It’s not like there’s anyone around to see us.”

Alex turned his head, assessing Jack to see if he was kidding or not. “Alright,” he agreed after a moment.

“Yes!” Jack cried, jumping up. He stripped off immediately, throwing his clothes down on the sand. “Come on!” he called as he splashed into the water.

Alex shook his head at him, smiling. He loved how playful Jack was sometimes.

Jack splashed around noisily as Alex stood and undressed, nicely folding his clothes next to Jack’s. He squished through the sand and eased into the water, the now-cool night air nipping at his skin.

“Come on, ‘Lex,” Jack shouted. “It’s not that cold, I promise.”

So Alex let go of his inhibitions, and splashed in after Jack. The chilly water licked at his ribs.

“See, it’s not that bad,” Jack said when Alex reached him.

“So I can do this?” Alex laughed, shoving the water in Jack’s direction.

“Hey!” the younger cried out, jumping away from the mini tsunami. He retaliated with an ever bigger wave.

The two played in the water, the bright moonlight acting as their lantern. After loads of splashing, Alex leapt forward to push Jack completely into the water, but Jack somehow managed to catch him, stumbling back. Alex’s legs were wrapped around Jack’s waist, their skin slick against the other’s.

Alex glanced down at their touching hips, then back up at Jack, biting his lip. He made a quiet sound in the back of his throat, and Jack understood. He leaned in and pressed his lips to Alex’s ever so slightly, a suggestion. Alex accepted by grinning, and moving his lips against Jack’s.

Jack drew his body closer to his, pressing their hips even closer together. Alex moaned, slipping his tongue into Jack’s mouth. Jack responded eagerly until Alex was starting to grind against him, throwing him off balance.

It was then that Jack decided this would be better done on the steady sand rather than standing in the water. Adjusting his grip on Alex, he began to move back towards the shore, and Alex moved his lips to Jack’s shoulder to let him see where he was going.

Jack navigated them back to the blanket, and gently lay Alex down. When he joined him, Alex growled softly, pushing Jack down on his back. Jack spread his legs for him as Alex wrapped one hand around his cock, casually slipping a finger into him at the same time. No lube was needed as they were both soaking wet, but Jack missed the slight burn of friction.

Alex fingered him slowly until Jack whispered, “I’m ready.”

The elder moved up between Jack’s legs, and, keeping eye contact, pressed himself deep into Jack. Jack’s jaw slackened, hands gripping the blanket. Alex paused, waiting, and then Jack was nodding, giving him the okay.

He moved in and out of Jack, his soft moans growing in volume.

“Jack…”

“Alex, fuck,” he agreed.

The heat was building in his stomach, and judging by Jack’s expression and heaving chest, he was close too. So Alex reached out a hand to help him along, and they were both reaching their high in a matter of seconds. Alex cried out as Jack screamed his name, both of them in synchronized ecstasy. There were fireworks behind Alex’s closed eyes.

When they both were finished, Alex pulled out and collapsed next to Jack. All that was left was the sound of their heavy breathing, and the lake touching the shore.

Alex broke the silence first. “See, I told you that you would have fun.”

“And right you were,” Jack laughed. He reached out for his husband like a child reaching for security. Alex wrapped his arms around Jack’s skinny torso. “And you know, maybe camping isn’t that bad.”
