"Where is Jack?" Zack asked me as he and Rian dug into their plates of the Chinese food we had just bought.

"Yeah, I feel like I haven't seen his dumb ass in days," Rian agreed, and I shrugged.

"I don't know. I've been stuck hanging out with Brynn for like three days straight. And she got totally pissed off whenever I used my phone, so I haven't been able to talk to him," I told them.

"Sounds like she's turning into quite the little bitch," Rian noted, and I rolled my eyes.

"I'm getting sick of her. She's always calling me. Always wanting to go out. Always checking up on me. It's like I can't even do anything without Brynn," I said, shaking my head before taking a bite of my food.

"What happened? I thought she was such a fantastic girlfriend," Zack asked, and I rolled my eyes.

"Maybe to my parents, but I don't think so," I answered.

"Break up with her," Rian told me, but I shook my head.

"I'd get my ass kicked."

"Fuck that. At least you wouldn't have to deal with a nagging girlfriend all the time," Rian said, but Zack gave me a curious look. I shot him a questioning one back, but he shook his head, looking down as he shoved another forkful of food into his mouth.

"Alex!" I heard my name being yelled, and I closed my eyes, groaning. I turned around, seeing Brynn walking over to us, followed by her little sister, Bree, and her best friend, Levia.

“Hey, Brynn,” I said, and she set her bags down by my feet before slipping herself onto my lap. She kissed me, and I reluctantly kissed back.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, glancing around the food court.

“I came up here to meet Zack and Rian,” I told her and she looked over at them.

“Oh,” she said, sounding put off. I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes. “Well, I was trying to call you earlier. Bree is going to the movies later with her new boyfriend. I was wondering if you would go along with me so we could double with them.”

“I can’t, Brynn,” I told, and she gave me a look like I had slapped her in the face.

“Why not?” she asked.

“I already have plans,” I told her, and she glared at me.

“With whom?”

“Zack and Rian. And maybe Jack,” I told her. “They want me to hang out tonight.”

“Uh huh, fine,” she said, biting the inside of her cheek. She got up, straightening her skirt and picking up her bags. Have fun then, boys. Bye, Alex.”

She stormed away, followed by Bree and Levia. I looked at Rian and Zack, shaking my head.

“Damn,” Rian whispered, and Zack shook his head.

“See what I mean?” I asked.

“She seems like she has some control issues,” Zack said.

“She seems like she wants to own me,” I said, taking my last bite and getting up from the table. “I’m gonna call Jack, and we’ll meet up at Zack’s later, okay?”

I picked up my phone, turning it on. As soon as it started up it started buzzing. I had two voicemails, and the texts just kept coming in. Most of them were from Jack.

I called my voicemail, listening to the first one, which was from Jack. Al he said was to call him when I could because he missed me and that he loved me. Hearing his voice made me smile. I hated going so long without talking to him. The second message began playing.

“Hey, Alex, call me when you get this. Please. We need to talk.”

My stomach dropped when I heard the last line.

“Shit,” I muttered. I quickly ended the call, hitting the two key and pressing the phone up to my ear. I listened to it ring, chewing my lip nervously.

“Hello,” Jack’s voice answered. He sounded tired, and it made me smile softly.

“Hey, baby,” I said, picking at my comforter.

“Hey, Lexy,” he said, and I heard him yawn.

“Did I wake you up?” I asked.

“Yeah, but it’s okay. I’ve been waiting for you to call,” he told me.

“I just got your message. I’m sorry I haven’t called you back. My phones been dead and my parents kept making me leave the house with the bitch,” I told him.

“It’s fine. C-can you come over? I have some stuff I need to tell you,” he told me, and I could feel myself growing nervous again.

“Y-yeah. I’ll be there in like, a half hour. Alright?”

“That’s fine. I’ll be waiting,” he told me.

“I love you. See you soon.”

“I love you too,” he responded, then I heard a click as the call ended. I put my phone down, plugging it back in. I looked at my reflection, making a face. I decided to take a shower ad do my hair before going over to Jack’s house. I wanted to look good for him.

****

I shut my car off, looking in the mirror and checking my hair. I shrugged at it, getting out of the car. I locked my car, walking up to Jack’s door and knocking on it.

“Hey, Alex,” May said, opening the door and letting me come inside. “Jack’s in the kitchen.”

“Thanks, May,” I told her, going into the kitchen and seeing Jack standing at the counter. He was making a sandwich, and I walked up behind him, wrapping my arms around his waist. “Hey.”

“Hey,” he said, relaxing into my body. I nuzzled my nose into his hair, kissing his ear.

“I missed you so much,” I told him, squeezing him softly.

“I missed you too. But Alex, I found out something big, and we really need to talk about it,” he told me, removing my hands gently, before turning to face me.

“W-what is it?” I asked, and he grabbed my hand, carrying his sandwich in the other one.

“C’mon,” he said, leading me towards the living room. “I think you should be sitting for this.”

“Ba- Jack,” I said, glancing over and seeing his mom walking through the door as we sat down on the couch.

“She knows, Alex,” he told me, and my eyes widened.

“A-about us?” I asked quietly and he nodded. “How?”

“I told her,” he responded, and I opened my mouth to yell at him, but he held up his hand. “Don’t say anything yet, Alex. Hear me out, then you’ll know why I had to tell her.”

“Alright,” I said.

“Okay. I’m just gonna tell and you can take it how you want to. You probably won’t even believe me, anyway.” He paused, taking a bite of the sandwich and chewing nervously.

“What is it, Jack?” I coaxed, rubbing his leg.

“I’m pregnant,” he said quietly.

“W-what?” I asked softly.

“We’re having a baby, Alex,” he told me, and I looked at his hands, feeling a bite confused.

“W-we? Are you cheating on me or something?” I asked, and he scoffed.

“Of course not! Are you fucking stupid?!” he demanded, surprising me.

“Jack,” I heard May warn, and I watched his face soften.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized, and I watched him bite his lip, looking down as his eyes began watering.

“It’s okay, babe,” I told him. “Jack, what is going on?”

“I told you. You and I, were having a baby,” he told me.

“H-how?” I asked. “I don’t-”

“It’s hard to explain,” Jack responded, picking at a hole on the knee of his jeans. “And it’s kind of…embarrassing.”

“I’m not gonna judge you, Jack,” I told him, watching a tear slip down his cheek. I reached my hand out, wiping it away and hearing him sniffle. “Just, help me understand what’s going on. ‘Cause the last time I was down there, I didn’t notice any part a baby could come out of.”

“It’s not there anymore,” he told me, voice a lot softer than normal.

“What’s not there? I mean, are we talking sex change, or what?”

“I’m a hermaphrodite, Alex,” he stated, and I watched as more tears leaked down his face. “I’m a total freak, and I wouldn’t blame you if you got up and left me now and never spoke to me again.”

I gave him a confused look, reaching my hands out and grabbing a hold of his. He looked up, tears leaving tracks down his cheeks. I shook my head at him as I wiped them away.

“That’s ridiculous,” I told him. “Why the fuck would I ever do that to you?”

He whimpered, shaking his head and shrugging softly.

“Jack, you really underestimate how much I love you. It doesn’t matter if you’re a boy, a girl, both, or some alien. You’re Jack. My Jack, and I will always love you. I don’t give a shit what you have hidden in your pants. I care about this,” I told him, holding my hand up to his chest and resting it over his heart.

“I love you, Lex,” he sobbed, and I pulled him close to me.

“I love you too. So much,” I whispered into his hair, holding his shaking body tightly.

“I’m sorry,” he told me, and I furrowed my eyebrows.

“What do you have to be sorry for?!” I demanded.

“This is my fault,” he replied.

“What? The baby?”

I felt him nod slightly, and I sighed.

“Jack, stop it. You obviously know how babies are made, so therefore you know it takes two people to conceive one. And don’t be saying it’s anyone’s fault. That makes it sound like you’re saying we’ve made a mistake, and I don’t want you to ever call our baby a mistake. This is a miracle, Jack,” I told him, and he looked up at me.

“You think so?” he asked, sniffling.

“Of course I do,” I told him. He fell silent, an I felt his hand slip between us. I separated from him, looking down and seeing him rubbing his hands over his stomach. I smiled, putting my hand at his lower stomach and stroking my thumb over it.

“I’m still undecided whether I believe this is all true or not,” he said. “Part of me is waiting for Ashton to jump out and tell me it’s all a joke.”

“Have you gotten an ultrasound or whatever yet? I mean, they’re positive you’re pregnant?” I asked and he nodded.

“They did blood work and urine tests. I have a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday to go get an ultrasound done,” he answered, and I bit my lip, adjusting our bodies so I could lay behind him, pulling him down to spoon with me. I put a hand on his stomach, resting it there.

“Can I go with you?” I asked. “To the, um, doctor’s appointment.”

“If you want to. It’s right after school,” he responded, settling his hand over mine. I nuzzled my nose into the back of his neck, smiling softly. “What are you smiling about?”

“You’re going to be a mommy, Jack,” I told him, giggling.

“Shut up,” he said, but I could hear the laughter in his voice. “What the hell are we going to do, Alex?”

“I don’t know, babe. This changes all of my plans,” I told him, kissing his ear.

“I know. I thought about that, too. I’m sorry, Alex,” he told me and I rolled my eyes.

“Don’t be sorry! Be excited,” I told him, sitting up. “We’re having a baby, Jack!”

He laughed, sitting up to catch my lips.

“I’m so terrified,” he told me, smiling, and I laughed.

“We’ll figure it out,” I told him. “You and me.”

“Shit,” he muttered, laughing and making me laugh. “I feel so bad for this kid.”
