Chapter Six

His mobile phone lay on the coffee table in front of him. He had been staring it for about ten minutes now, not really sure of what to send to his ‘best mate’, worried about what Alex would think. Jack felt stupid, worrying so much like this, but he couldn’t just text him, ‘Hey Alex, I’ve been in love with you for eight years, d’you think you could come over, please?’ No way, he had to handle this smoothly. The two them of them hadn’t hung out in what seemed like forever anyway, so he thought that maybe by inviting the guy round and doing something together would maybe, hopefully strengthen their relationship as friends a bit more, even if that possibly had the exact amount of succeeding as seeking a needle in a haystack. He needed to get his friend back and try to bond with him again, try to find the best friend in him that Alex had been all those years ago. And there was only one way he could work this out without Alex getting too suspicous, he guessed, by taking baby steps. So he’d just simply ask him to come over. If he was home. And had nothing to do.  And seemed willing to actually spend his free time with Jack alone for once.

He picked up his phone, biting his lip and staring at it hard for a moment before deciding on what was best to say.

- ‘You busy? X’

The X was really just Jack’s thing. He’d only send it to Alex, not to Zack nor Rian, not even to his mom. He knew Alex never returned it, but that didn’t keep Jack from smiling every time the shorter boy answered his few texts. He sent it and stared at the screen anxiously before receiving a reply.

- ‘Nope’

Typical Alex, he supposed. No punctuation marks, no X, just words. Well, that’s what it was about anyway, wasn’t it? The content of the message.

- ‘Wanna hang out? X’

Jack couldn’t help breathing a little faster as his fingers sped over the keys. He sent the text and leaned back, thinking that he didn’t even know what they were going to do and that they couldn’t stay at Jack’s place forever. Besides, they both would feel uncomfortable to a point where one of them would have to leave the room, probably. Watching a movie wasn’t really something they would do and seeing as it was December, going outside in fucking freezing temperatures was out of the question.

He’d been sick of rehearsals since getting back from tour and wanted to keep his mind off music for a while, even if that meant only for a couple of weeks. Oddly enough, being with Alex would the perfect distraction. He’d never admit it outright but Alex had this way of making his mind go blank and his stomach flip. Totally cheesy, he knew, but that was it. The sound of his phone buzzing brought him back to reality and he cast a curious eye over the screen.

- ‘Sure, your place in half an hour’

Jack’s face broke into a smile so wide the corners of his mouth cramped a little. His place. That meant an empty house because his mom wasn’t home. She was working, again. She’d work whenever she could, and for whatever reasons, Jack didn’t really know but since his mum didn’t have the time to talk to him much lately, he didn’t mind. But anyway, just the two of them in an empty house. The thought creeped Jack out a bit since he’d never actually hung out alone with Alex like this for what must’ve been a few years; it’d always been the four of them or the two of them alongside their families. But it now it was just Alex. Just him and Alex.

Deciding to take a shower before Alex got there, the thought of making a good impression somehow slipped into Jack’s mind. Why he’d even want to make an impression on the guy both confused and terrified him since there wasn’t any real need to pamper himself; they’d known each other for nine fucking years! But honestly, he just wanted to be noticed by Alex. He wanted Alex to acknowledge what they had, could have again. He wanted Alex to see the love that he’d been harboring for him for so long, evident in the way he never wanted to let Alex out of his sight. But Jack himself, he wanted to be seen.

He stripped out of his clothes and turned on the shower, climbing in and letting the hot water run down his body while his mind raced, full of thoughts about the upcoming hours. He still didn’t have a clue as to what they were going to do or what he even wanted to do. It was at this point that he realised maybe letting Alex come over was too early and too big of a step to take. He hoped to be able to open up to the older boy a bit more, so hopefully in a few months, he could show off the old Jack, the Jack he wanted to be, the Jack that loved Alex with all his heart.

He turned the water off and stepped out of his shower, taking a towel and drying himself while slowly heading up to his room. He had no clue what to wear. Jack knew something like the sweatpants and hoodie he had been wearing wouldn’t really do much for him, not even Alex, so he rapidly changed into something more casual. Skinny jeans and a black v-neck seemed okay. He didn’t want to dress up too much though, for fear Alex would think something was up and start asking questions. He really didn’t want to fuck this up.

Once Jack was dressed, he went back downstairs and took his place on the couch again, waiting for a good fifteen minutes or so and fiddling with his phone. The bell rang, startling in the silence, and he flinched in surprise at the sound. The realisation that Alex was standing on the other side of the door made him almost rethink the whole thing but a quick glance at the clock told him it seemed like Alex was on time. He rushed to the front door, taking a deep breath before opening it slowly with what he hoped was a pleasant enough smile on his face.

Alex was standing on his porch, smiling his ‘light-up-a-whole-room’ smile. Jack had seen him using it multiple times, usually addressed to his girlfriend, but never had he actually smiled that smile in front of Jack. It made him feel invincible. That was when Jack noticed a car parked in the driveway, the sound of an engine still running greeting his ears. He looked over Alex’s shoulder, squinting against the light to see if he’d brought company. Brown locks of hair and sharp eyes that locked onto his with a ferocity that Jack found a little unsettling: Lisa. Of course. So apparently Alex had got back together with her. Great. His grin slowly faded when he noticed the way she was staring at the two of them from where she was sat and he looked away uneasily.

“Can’t stay for long, Lisa and I are going out this evening.” Alex’s grin faltered for a moment, looking as though he felt guilty about what he’d just said. As if he’d wanted to say more, explain the situation better but… let it slide.

“Oh, no prob.” Jack smiled, still happy that Alex had decided to show up. He flashed another smile before jerking his head back towards the house. “Come on in.”
