He was lying in the empty, cold bed as he watched the lifeless concrete above him. He should be used to the feeling by now, but with recent events, the bed felt even more alien than ever before. The springs creaked underneath him as his weight shifted to look out the little window. He usually didn’t look at the window-the bars only reminded him of the restrictions he’s had all his life. He remembers the ambitions he had and the dreams he was sure he’d conquer. He didn’t except this, he never excepted that these ambitions and dreams would be shattered by an eternity in hell. Those bars restrict freedom even when it’s only inches away. If he snaked his hand through the bar, he could open the window and feel the soft wind on his fingertips. He could feel freedom pass right by him. That's all that has been on Alex's mind since last week. Freedom. He could never live free, he knew that, but to stay on earth just a while longer is all he's asking. He knows he has fucked up, but he won't admit it, and that's what might get him killed.

Lost in thought, he didn’t hear the gate into his chambers slide open, “Alex.”

Alex heard his voice with a safe insecurity. His stomach started soaring with butterflies, but a quick thought of his mind brought an anvil through his throat to crush his memories of the man in front of him. Alex looked the man in his beautiful, brown eyes. They were dull and red around the edges. Alex has never seen these eyes not bright and almost enthusiastic. Alex has always been jealous that a soul could have so much joy. Now, they look like they hadn't closed for rest in days and he could have been crying; a lot. The thought broke Alex's heart, or whatever remains of it laid there in the left cavity of his chest, but he had to remain hard. He could not let anyone in like he did with this officer.

“What do you want, Officer?” The bitterness in Alex's voice stung the boy in uniform. He stood straighter, hoping to look more professional then he wanted to be.

“I just wanted to see if…”

“If we’re fine, Jack? Because we aren’t. I have too much to worry about and right now, you’re not one of them. When you left, did you think about me? Did you care? I can tell you didn’t, otherwise you wouldn’t have left. So no, Jack, we’re not fine; we’re not even okay! Nothing will ever be okay.”
