Jack ran his fingers through the older boy’s hair, watching him sleep. He wanted to know what was going on with him. He didn’t feel as scared as he had before. He was starting to realize now that Alex didn’t want to hurt him. He never meant any harm to him. Alex was sick, and he needed help.

He sighed, looking up at the television and watching as a random episode of Family Guy played on the television.

He wanted to talk to Alex about what was going. Who was Lucas? How long had this all been going on? It didn’t seem like Lucas was just a new character he had snapped and made. It seemed as if he had been haunting Alex for a long time, driving him crazy. But why had none of them ever noticed before? Did anyone else even know about Alex’s problem?

Not that that was the only thing Jack hadn’t noticed about the other boy before. When had he fallen in love with him? Jack had never realized the other boy had such strong feelings for him. Or how these feelings were affecting him. He couldn’t help but feel somewhat responsible for how miserable Alex was. Jack had been through his fair share of unreturned feelings from a crush. It sucked, and it hurt. And it had to be ten times worse when you’re mentally ill.

He looked down at the boy, biting his lip. Of course, he didn’t believe he returned the feelings. He had always felt a connection with Alex, but that was normal. He and Alex were best friends, and had been through all the awkward phases of their lives. Through the confusion of finding out their sexuality and discovering who they were as a person. Jack began to wonder if Alex had ever actually figured anything of those things out, or if Jack was too wrapped up in his own situation to focus on Alex’s progress. Maybe he was still confused on this inside too. Maybe this whole ‘in love with Jack’ thing was a phase too. It was normal for adolescents to feel as though they were falling for their best friend. Maybe Alex had just never grown out of that.

Jack sighed, biting his lip and shaking his head. No, he knew that wasn’t true. He had seen the hurt in Alex’s eyes, the pain of telling him how he felt and seeing Jack freak out. Alex was truly in love with Jack, and it made Jack’s heart ache. He wasn’t sure he could actually return those feelings.

He looked at Alex’s sleeping face, running his thumb over his cheek. He was still the same boy Alex had known since they were fourteen, but now he was older. His face was more defined and scruffy, but his facial hair wasn’t patchy like it had been. He was attractive, of course, but Jack had always told him that. Almost everyone that laid eyes on Alex believed he was attractive. A lot of it had to do with his personality. Jack had always seen him laughing and joking in his dry, sarcastic humor. Although Jack couldn’t remember seeing him laugh since they got here. Jack couldn’t remember even laughing himself since they got here. He didn’t like it.

He laid down, nuzzling his face against his best friend’s shoulder. He was tired of this situation. He wanted his Alex back, even if he had to make some personal sacrifices.

Alex woke up on the couch in the living room, looking around curiously. He stretched, arching his back and rubbing his eyes. He sat up, stretching again and feeling his body pop and crack in all the right places.

Alex ran his fingers through his hair, scratching his head and looking around. Sunlight was shining brightly through the window, and the title menu for the Family Guy DVD was playing repeatedly. But none of those things were what woke Alex up.

The smell of bacon and eggs was drafting through the house, along with the smell of coffee. Alex could even hear the sizzle of the bacon. He stood up, walking into the kitchen and seeing Jack standing before the stove, holding a spatula. He glanced over at Alex as he entered the room, smiling.

“Hey, Lex,” he said, turning over a piece of bacon. “Good morning.”

“Morning,” Alex mumbled, leaning against the counter and watching Jack cook. “You’re up early.”

“You’re up late, actually,” Jack answered with a grin. “It’s almost noon.”

“Really?” Alex asked and he nodded. “Oh.”

“You want an omelette?” Jack asked him and he nodded, watching the younger boy slip his own omelette onto a plate. He removed the bacon from the frying pan, setting it down on paper towel to soak the grease up. Jack glanced up at Alex, cracking an egg. “You okay?”

“Yeah. My neck kinda hurts. I must have slept funny,” he answered and Jack nodded.

“Oh. That might’ve been my fault. I kind of hogged the pillow,” Jack answered and Alex made a face. “What?”

“Jack, don’t do this to me. Yesterday you were chomping at the bit to get away from me. You tried leaving me when I was in the shower. Now you’re making me breakfast and joking around like it’s nothing. Don’t treat me like I’m stupid,” he answered and Jack sighed.

“Alex, I don’t want to get away from you. I want to be with you. I told you last night that I’m going to be here for you no matter what. I love you,” he told him and Alex cringed.

“Don’t,” Alex mumbled, moving forward to pour himself a cup of coffee.

“Alex, I know something’s going on,” Jack told him, stepping forward and touching his forearm. “I know that you don’t wanna talk about it, but I know there’s something. I heard you talking to... him... last night.”

“You didn’t hear anything. I wasn’t talking to anyone,” Alex mumbled, shaking his head and stirring the coffee in the cup.

“I just care, Alex. And I want to show you that I care,” Jack said, rubbing his thumb over the pulse point on Alex’s wrist.

“My omelette’s burning,” Alex answered, avoiding Jack’s gaze.

“Oh, shit,” Jack mumbled, moving away from him and taking the egg out of the pan. He put it on a plate, frowning at it. “You can have mine if you want.”

Alex didn’t respond, taking the plate from Jack’s hands and grabbing a handful of bacon before walking back into the living room.

Jack sighed, putting some bacon onto his own plate and pouring himself a cup of coffee. He poured some cream and sugar into it, stirring it up and throwing the spoon into the sink. He walked into the living room, sitting on the opposite end of the couch from Alex. Alex had started over that season of Family Guy, eating a piece of bacon. Jack watched him out of the corner of his eye as he ate his own omelette, putting his feet up on the coffee table. He watched Alex crack a smile, chuckling at one of the jokes. This made Jack smile, and he took a bite of his bacon. He laughed at the joke also, reaching forward for his coffee.

“I missed hearing you laugh,” Jack mumbled quietly to Alex. “And seeing you smile.”

Alex looked at him inquisitively, licking the crumbs away from his lips.

“I have a hard time believing you’re sincere,” Alex answered, and Jack looked at him.

“Why?” Jack asked and Alex sighed.

“Because I’ve already bared my fucking soul to you, and you had no interest in anything to do with me then, and now suddenly you want to be all over me,” Alex answered and Jack nodded.

“Yeah, but in my defense I was terrified then. I didn’t know what was going on, or what you were trying to do to me,” Jack answered and Alex sighed.

“I wouldn’t do anything to you,” Alex mumbled softly.

“You wouldn’t,” Jack said and Alex looked up.

“I don’t trust anyone. I can’t trust anyone,” Alex told him. “I love you, but-”

“You don’t need to explain Alex,” Jack said. “I love you too.”

“Don’t,” Alex answered, squeezing his eyes shut.

Jack sighed, licking his lips and looking back at the older boy.

“I want to help you, Alex,” Jack said, putting his empty plate down and moving over closer to the boy. “I want to show you that it’s not true. That you are amazing and you mean the world to me.”

Jack slid his hand over, resting it on Alex’s knee and looking Alex. The older boy flinched, holding his breath for a few second.

“Don’t touch me,” Alex snapped, shoving his hand away and standing up. “You don’t know shit!”Jack is kinda playing with fire... Hmmm...?
