When he finally came to, the first thing he saw was bright white light. His eyes slowly got adjusted to being awake again and he grunted, his face pressed against the carpet. Why was he on the floor?

“It’s about time you woke up, sleeping beauty,” He heard from across the room, and when he glanced up, he saw his best friend; his best friend whom he watched die on the streets of Baltimore, sitting on his bed.

Oh. Right, that was why he was on the floor.

Jack saw the flash of terror slide across Alex’s face and he figured he was about to scream. “I swear to god, if you scream, I will kill myself.” He laughed slightly, a sort of sad chuckle. “Guess I can’t do that, can I? But don’t scream. You promised you wouldn’t right before you passed out.”

“Y..You’re here. You’re fucking here right now, s-sitting on my god damn bed.”

“That would seem to be the case,” Jack said sarcastically, relishing in the fear and astonishment of his living best friend.
“You’re dead,” Alex whispered, not removing himself from the harsh, cold floor.

“Well,” Jack began, folding his hands on his lap, looking as if he was about to go into some sort of riveting tale of life, death, love and divine intervention, “Yeah. I’m as dead as it gets, kiddo. But there’s this really cool shit called the afterlife and I’m a ghost,” He finished, though he found himself unhappy with the wording. “I guess I’m not really a ghost, I’m an angel.”
It stayed silent in the room, the only thing that could be heard was Alex’s heavy, deep breathing as he tried to intake all of this information. There was a sudden rush of every single emotion he’d felt over the past months since he’d been without Jack: nostalgia, sadness, anger. Suicidal even. With the sudden fiery, violent explosion of feelings tears welled in the corners of both of his brown eyes, threatening to spill over and swim down his face.

The angel saw this and his face softened, every witty and sarcastic remark he’d had in mind melted like butter in the microwave. “Hey, hey. Don’t cry, Alex. If you cry, then I’m gonna start crying and I don’t even think I can physically cry anymore,” Jack murmured soothingly, getting off the bed and walking over to the mousy brown haired boy.

In attempt to comfort him, he tried to gently pat his shoulder, but in vain as his hand drifted right through Alex as if the boy was merely air. He cocked his head to the side slightly, a frown forming on his cold, pale pink lips. Suddenly he remembered the touch of another person and a sick, angry nostalgic frost bit at his heart.

“I missed you so much, Jack, and..and here you are, it’s like fucking magic. Every morning I would wake up and wonder if you would be in school a-and if this was just some sick fucking dream, but every, every single fucking day you would continue to not show up,” Alex choked out between sobs, his chest heaving up and down, body trembling against the floor.
“Shh,” Jack cooed, “I’ve always been here, Alex. Never left you.”

He sat there as Alex cried out all of his feelings, watching as he curled himself into a small cat like ball on the floor and sobbed into his knees which probably had rug burn on them now. The sight all but broke his heart. If he had known that coming back and making himself visible to Alex would send him back reeling into an oblivion of sadness, he never would have done it. He would still be lurking in the sidelines, making sure that Alex didn’t get hurt or get himself into any trouble. And yet, here he was. He’d hurt alex, and even though it wasn’t physically, a small part of his still heart felt as if he’d failed his innocent in a way. There was a name for what he was feeling, but he just couldn’t place a finger on it, until Alex suddenly broke the silence with a broken scream.

“I fucking love you Jack!”

Yeah. That was it.

Still, he was unable to form a coherent thought as he stared at Alex, his lips parted slightly as if words were coming out but none were running past. He loved Alex. He had all along, seeing his smile and laugh sort of made his day when he was alive. And over the past months when he’d watch alex cry over him, all the hours he spent laying in his bed with his heart on his sleeve was more communication than they’d ever had. Jack could lay there next to Alex and the other wouldn’t know. He wouldn’t disturb Alex and he could watch him fall asleep, and his face would look like he had finally found peace in the oblivious slumber.

“I love you too.”

Alex’s breathing settled considerably and his eyes were scrunched closed, his body still slightly trembling from the earth quake worthy sobs.

“Come on,” Jack whispered, “Go lay down in your bed. I’ll lay down with you, yeah?” He asked, his original statement sounding unsure. The male on the floor nodded and pushed himself up slowly, listening and feeling his bones crack with the sudden release of pressure. He almost moaned. The tingling sensation that followed stretching overtook his body in a sort of pleasurable way.

He collapsed onto his bed, pulling himself under the blankets and sheets with his shoes and jeans still on. Alex didn’t care right now. He could always kick them off later. His eyes trailed after Jack as he watched him lay down right next to him, his body making a visible dent on the bed but he couldn’t feel it shift.

The younger boy sniffled, looking up at Jack with his eyes red rimmed, tears stained with cheeks from his mental breakdown. “I thought you said you were an angel?” He inquired, looking Jack’s body up and down.
“I am.”

“Then where are your wings?” He asked again, pulling the blanket up under his chin. A grin formed on Jack’s face, pressing the side of his face into the blanket.

“Haven’t gotten them yet.”

“When will you?”

“I dunno,” He replied, watching as Alex closed his eyes again, sure enough, Alex was dozing asleep, but still had one question left in him. “Hey, Jack?”

“Yeah?”

“Stay with me. Don’t ever leave again.”
