My hands were sweaty. Just a little. They were also shaking just a little also.

I adjust my shirt, rolling the hem between my fingers.

“So, where are you from, Aly?” I heard Jack speak, and I glanced over at him. I blushed a little, looking down at my knees. Why was I so nervous? He was my best friend.

Because you know he’s checking you out. And he actually likes you.

Oh, hey, alter-ego. I missed you. Not.

Jack cleared his throat, and I looked over at him, blushing deeper as I realized I had zoned out. He glanced over at me, seeing my flushed face and smiling.

“It’s really cute how you blush so much,” he told me, and I blushed deeper. He laughed, reaching his hand over. I watched as his fingers moved slowly to mine, moving to grab a hold of my hand. I quickly pulled away, not wanting to freak him out with my gross, sweaty hands.

But of course, me pulling away quickly gave off a different connotation to him.

“I’m sorry,” I said, seeing the small ghost of a frown setting on his face. But I knew Jack, and I knew when he was upset. “I just- I- My hands are really sweaty.”

His face screwed up, and then he laughed. I frowned, staring out the window. Wasn’t the whole plan to not make him aware of my nervousness. Aly is not smooth. Aly is not smooth at all.

“You can relax. I’m not going to kick you out of my car if you’re not perfect. I’m actually pretty nice,” he said, turning into the parking lot of Starbucks.

“I’m sorry,” I repeated.

“Let’s go inside,” he said, opening the door and getting out.

He stood in front of the car, waiting patiently for me to join him. He took my hand gingerly when I was close to him, and I swallowed my nerves, lacing my fingers with his.

“So, you never answered my question; where are you from?”

“Baltimore,” I answered, holding his hand loosely. It felt amazing, the way our hands fit perfectly together.

“Really? That’s cool,” he said. He held the door open for me, allowing me to walk in. I dropped his hand, going in front of him and walking in the door.

I felt his hand rest lightly on the small of my back as we walked towards the counter.

“What do you want?” he asked, looking down at me.

“A Tazo Chai Crème Frappucino,” I answered, and he ordered it for me. He ordered his own drink, and then glanced back down at me.

“Anything else you want? Like from the bakery?”

I bit my lip, looking around. My eyes widened as they laid on the red velvet cake.

“What?” he asked, looking down. “What are you looking at?”

“The Red Velvet Whoopie Pies,” I answered.

“You want it?” he asked.

“No, it’s ok-”

He was already ordering it before the words left my mouth.

After we got all of our order he led me over to a small table. I sat down across from him, sipping my drink.

“So, what do you do, for a living?” he asked, dark eyes trained on me.

“I go to school,” I told him.

“That’s cool. What are you going to school for?”

“I’m not really sure yet. I’m thinking about nursing, maybe,” I said.

“Nurses are sexy,” Jack smirked, and I rolled my eyes. I sipped my drink again, licking my lips. I looked up, seeing his eyes focused on my full bottom lip. I looked away, eyes settling on the Whoopie Pie at the center of the table. I picked on up, licking the frosting off the side where it was starting to bulge out. It was cream cheese frosting. My favorite.

“Mmm,” I moaned, taking a bite out of the soft, moist cake. The cake and the frosting mingled on my tongue perfectly, and I closed my eyes, chewing slowly.

I heard Jack cough slightly, and I opened my eyes, seeing him staring at me.

“I take it you like it, then,” he said, eyebrows raised at me.

“I love it. It’s delicious,” I said.

“That’s good. I’m just hoping that’s not the last time I get to see you make a face like that,” he said, making me blush a deep red.

“I just really love red velvet cake, okay?”

He took a sip of his own drink, watching me again.

“Hey, Aly,” he said, and I looked up.

“Yeah?”

“Can I take you out? Like, on a real date?” he asked, and I grinned.

“Y-yes. Of course,” I said, probably a little too quickly.

He laughed, smiling at me. “Alright. Tomorrow night.”

“Sounds good,” I answered, nodding.
