Author's Notes: The first one! It took me long enough. I hope you enjoy and I don’t own ‘High School Musical’, its characters nor ‘Twinkle Town’
“We do not have all day, people!” Ms. Darbus snapped as the young cast of ‘Twinkle Town’ struggled to get the dance sequence right. Pinching the bridge of her nose, she let out a deep sigh. “One more time from the top! And let’s not have anymore mistakes. The play is in less than three weeks and we’re still not even halfway to being perfect.”
Ms. Darbus clapped her hands together as a signal for her students to get into their starting positions. As Kelsi began the opening chords of the current musical number they were rehearsing, there was a sudden loud fizzle and bang before the lights shorted out. The hall was plunged into darkness and Ms. Darbus’ young charges didn’t dare speak, afraid they would upset the already stressed teacher.
“Well,” came a clearly exasperated reply from somewhere near the stage. Ms. Darbus was doing her best to keep calm and not erupt into an angry outburst at how this was clearly Coach Bolton’s fault because he wants more money for his basketball team than in running the electricity. She let out a deep, zen-like breath and continued, “I guess we’ll have to postpone this much-needed rehearsal until the lights come back up.” She ushered two stagehands towards her, but in the darkness they stumbled into set pieces and over wires so she let out another long sigh. “Oh, honestly. I’ll just do it myself!” she snapped and Ms. Darbus ventured towards the doors. Fortunately, after twenty five years of teaching at the school, she could navigate her way around the stage in complete darkness - even if her students couldn’t.
After telling her cast to stay exactly where they were because the problem would be resolved eventually and they really did need the practice, she marched towards the main doors and disappeared.
“You can let go of my hand now,” Troy whispered to the girl next to him. As the lights had gone out, Gabriella had latched onto his arm for protection and somehow had found his hand in the dark. Though it was almost pitch black he was sure he could see her blush - but she still didn’t let go.
“Sorry, I just got a little freaked. I’ve never had this happen before,” she apologized. He nodded.
“Well I don’t think Ms. Darbus is too pleased. She already thinks that the school doesn’t care enough about the drama club. She’ll probably see it at a personal thing.”
“What do you think it was caused by?” she asked.
“You’re asking me? You’re the freaky math girl, you should be able to solve it.” He was lightly punched on the arm by the girl.
“Don’t call me that… freaky callback boy.”
“Hey, we’ve already done the callbacks. Now I’m freaky lead-man-in-a-musical guy.”
“Ryan!” Sharpay’s voice screeched from somewhere at the back of the stage. There were sounds of a small scuffle before Sharpay’s loud heels made a noise to indicate she was moving backstage somewhere, with Ryan following close behind.
“Do you think she’s mad that she got the part of the talking tomato?” Gabriella asked. Instead of being the understudies for Minnie and Arnold, Ms. Darbus had delegated the siblings to supporting roles. Well, at least they’d be on the stage.
“Probably. Why do we even need a talking tomato in the musical?” Troy questioned. “Does this musical even make sense to you?”
“The songs do,” Gabriella agreed, “but other than that…” she shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m just thrilled to even be in it. At least I get to sing and spend time with you. I mean, with your basketball and my scholastic club, we’re kind of busy. The musical is the only real time we can spend in school.”
Troy sighed, “Yeah, but basketball season is almost over so that’s less practice.”
“But after the musical…” Gabriella began. She knew that the musical was one of the only things the two had in common. They’d won the praise of the whole school with their performance at the callbacks and she knew that most people only thought they were together because of the musical, and she was afraid they were right.
“Hey, come on, after the musical we’ll still see each other. Who else would help me with my algebra homework?” he teased, earning another punch. “No, seriously, Gabriella. We’ll still see each other. I’ll make sure of that.” He promised.
Though still shrouded by darkness, he could sense how close she was to him. If he could actually see her face, he’d probably try and kiss her cheek or something, but he was afraid he’d end up bumping into her nose and making an ass out of himself. Before he could even pluck up the courage to make any type of move, the lights flickered back on and they all cheered before groaning at the effect the harsh stage lights had on them.
Ms. Darbus walked in with an air of accomplishment and clapped her hands for them to settle down and pick up from there they left off.
“Hey Gabriella,” Troy whispered. She looked up at him in question, “you can let go of my hand now.”
The End.
