(Mods, if this is unacceptable please delete!)
The rescue that I sometimes foster for, The Little Dog Rescue, keeps several dogs as "sponsored dogs" because they came to the rescue needing special care that is ongoing, making them unsuited for rehoming.
One of these is Beau, a Lakeland Terrier cross with epilepsy. Beau's fits require a delicate balance of medication to control, and now the vet is saying he needs a surgery. Someone made a donation that will get him into the vet, but for the balance of the op and ongoing care we still need to raise funds, and to that end I have promised to spread the word!
From Beau's page on the rescue website:
"Beau has been in foster care in Sheffield since the end of December 2010 having been signed over by his owners who wanted the best for him, being unable to cope with the distress they felt witnessing his seizures."
"(Tests) show that Beau's liver is working perfectly, which rules that out as the cause of his symptoms. Ordinarily a clear test result would be good news, but in this case it's not because it now confirms that the symtoms are definitely neurological, and that something is very wrong with Beau's brain."
"We're learning that Beau has good days and bad days. Some days he's lively, active, alert and playful and others he just wants to sleep, usually as close to me as he can get.
The good days see him running with the others, playing chase and play-fighting. The bad days he'll trip up the backdoor step, struggle to potter round the garden and looks sleepy and disorientated.
However, most of the time he's a content boy, and we'll continue to do our best to ensure that remains the case..."
"Unfortunately Beau's run of good luck seems to be taking a break.
On Thursday morning when he woke up and came downstairs (he sleeps upstairs so there's always someone to respond if he was to have a fit) we think he landed too heavily on the last step. He didn't yelp but once downstairs was holding his right hind leg up and refusing to put weight on it.
After checking him all over for any obvious injuries I spoke to Chris and we agreed to give him some pain relief and monitor as it may have been a pulled muscle, or he'd slept on it awkwardly.
By Friday morning it was no better so off we went for a vet check. Beau met one of the new vets, who was very thorough, but her face was a puzzle when she examined his leg, gave it a good wriggle and said "I've not felt anything like that before" and went off to get a second opinion.
Beau's favourite vet Catherine then gave it a good check over and gave us the worst news possible
Despite showing no sign of pain Beau has completely torn his cruciate ligament AND popped his kneecap
Beau's pain tolerance must be high bless him because he never murmured throughout, and just wanted to get off the table and go home.
After getting over the shock of the news we moved onto treatment and costs...and this is the really bad news
A torn cruciate alone can often heal...but the kneecap is detached and only surgery will ensure it goes back in place."
Homepage of the rescue forum:
http://thelittledogrescue.proboards.com/index.cgi If you can move Beau's story about your social networks, that would be fantastic. If you would like to donate toward his care, there is a paypal button on the top of the page I linked.
Edit: for some reason, the forum isn't wanting to cough up access to the sponsored dogs section without a login, though it appears from looking at it that you can "log in" with whatever social network you favor if that is your thing. I don't know why it's wanting that but I can't seem to get around it! Beau's thread which has his whole story is accessible from the "sponsored dogs" section if you choose to either join the forum or log in from facebook or wherever. Really sorry about that, not sure what the dealio is there.
