Challenge 14 - Fandom Food

Jan 28, 2018 19:47

I decided that I really am no cook and don't have the time or patience to figure out what to make and then go out and buy all the ingredients. So Option 2 seemed a possibility for me. As a theme... well, science fiction has always been a love of mine and I do like the occasional drink so I decided to checkout a few of my favorite TV shows/movies and then check online to see if a recipe was available. Among the cocktail/drink recipes are various famous drinks from Captain Kirk's favorite Saurian Brandy through to Harry Potter's Butterbeer.

1. Saurian Brandy - Star Trek: TOS

Everyone knows of Captain Kirk's love of Saurian Brandy.

Ingredients

1/4 cup grated orange rind
1 pint of 100 proof vodka
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup grade A maple syrup

Mixing Instructions

1. Put orange rind in a half-pint jar with 1/4 cup vodka.
Seal it and shake occasionally.
Let it steep overnight.

2. Pour sugar and 1 2/3 cups vodka into a 28 ounce bottle.
Seal it and shake until all the sugar is dissolved, then add the maple syrup.

3. Filter the orange extract through a fine handkerchief or coffee filter until it becomes clear.

4. Add a tablespoon of the final extract to the vodka syrup mixture and mix well.

If your orange peels are much more or less aromatic than average, adjust the quantity so that you have enough to hide the maple flavor, without having enough to make the liqueur bitter or recognizably orange flavored.

2. Romulan Ale - Star Trek: TOS/TNG

An infamous blue alchoholic beverage with a powerful kick, the drink has been banned in the United Federation of Planets since before 2285 and is still not a commonly known commodity. Thsi recipe comes with a warning: This drink is made with Grain Alcohol (aka, Everclear). While very little is used, this drink is not for the weak (or smart). Only YOU are responsible for what you do during and after consumption of Romulan Ale. Recipe makes one 750ml bottle, approximately. You may want to sample as you go along as individual tastes differ.

Ingredients.

2 Cups Blue Curacao
1 Cup Clear Rum, no flavor or spice
1/2 Cup Grain Alcohol - (NOTE - You may substitute Vodka if you can’t get or do not want the Grain Alcohol).
1/2 Viso Will - (NOTE - If you can’t get Viso Will, you can use any Cranberry Lemonade, just know the color will be off, since Viso does not color their drinks).

Mixing Instructions

Mix in a sealed bottle.
Chill till ice cold.
Serve. Die.

Note: There is a new addition to the fine and smooth Romulan Ale. Now that real Absinthe is legal within the Federation, you can test your liver like never before with the Cort and Aaron tested Cloaking Device. What is this cocktail? Simple. One-part Romulan Ale. One part Absinthe. Mix. Shoot. Why call it the Cloaking Device? Simple, after a drink or two, you will be absolutely convinced you’re invisible!

4. Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Invented by Zaphod Beeblebrox, in the Douglas Adams' novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The effect of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is described as having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon, wrapped 'round a large gold brick. It has also been described in the novel as the alcoholic equivalent to a mugging; expensive and bad for the head. This recipe should be a little less potent.

Ingredients

tablespoon gin
1 tablespoon light rum
1 tablespoon vodka
1 tablespoon tequila
2 tablespoons creme de menthe liqueur
2 tablespoons Galliano
1 scoop ice cubes
1 slice lemon

Mixing Instructions

Combine the gin, rum, vodka, tequila, creme de menthe, Galliano and ice in the container of a blender.
Cover, and blend until slushy.
Pour into a glass and garnish with a slice of lemon or olive.

5. Mudder's Milk - Firefly

For your next "Browncoats" party why not mix up some traditional Mudder's milk? All the protein, vitamins and carbs of your grandma's best turkey dinner. Serves three curious individuals, two nutty drunks, or one bloody nutter of a Reaver, who will ask for seconds...

2-3 Shots of Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey
1/2 Cup Milk
1/2 Cup Plain Greek Yogurt
1 Banana
2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter
1/4 Cup Oatmeal

6. Ambrosia - Battlestar Galactica

Ambrosia was made out of nectar and is said to be the food of the Greek gods. On Battlestar Galactica the drink isn't quite as mythical, but made in prison labor camps. Makes 36 oz. of delicious concoction.

Ingredients

6 oz Midori
4 oz Blue Curacao
2 oz lime juice

Mixing Instructions

Add all ingredients to the blender
Add ice as directed in the owners manual.
Garnish with a stemmed cherry and enjoy!

7. The Spice Melange - Dune

Melange, often referred to as simply "the spice", is the most essential and valuable commodity in the Dune universe, a drug that gives the user a longer life span, greater vitality, and heightened awareness. It can also unlock prescience in some humans. This prescience-enhancing property makes safe and accurate interstellar travel possible. Melange comes with a steep price, however: it is addictive, and withdrawal is fatal.

Ingredients

2 oz bourbon
½ oz rosemary syrup
8 drops cardamom bitters
4 drops chocolate bitters

Mixing Instructions

Combine in a shaker over ice, strain into an old fashioned glass filled with ice.

8. Butterbeer - Harry Potter

I've chosen the alcoholic recipe for the Wizarding world's favorite drink :)

Ingredients

1 oz Butterscotch schnapps
1 oz Vanilla vodka
6 oz Cream soda

Frothy Topping:
1/4 cup Whipped cream

or butterscotch whipped cream.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine heavy whipping cream and butterscotch sundae topping.
Using a hand mixer, whip until soft peaks form.

9. Slurm - Futurama

Slurm is a fictional soft drink in the Futurama universe. It is popular and highly addictive, and is Fry's favorite drink. It is widely seen throughout the universe. Slurm delivery trucks can be frequently spotted, including in the Futurama opening credits. The drink's slogan is 'It's Highly Addictive!' and its distribution is handled by Bureau of Soft Drinks, Tobacco, and Firearms, a parody of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (which is now known as Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives).

Ingredients

Ginger Limeade Syrup about 2.5 -3 cups (chilled)
1 ¼ cup vodka chilled
1 ¼ cup club soda chilled
Yellow and green food colouring
4 printed labels for Slurm
4 x 12 fl oz empty glass bottles

Mixing Instructions

Cut out the labels and stick them on 4 clean, dry glass bottles using regular glue.
Add a few drops of yellow and green colouring to the ginger limeade syrup to get the desired bright green shade of Slurm.
Pour into a jug and then mix in chilled vodka and chilled club soda.
Divide into four bottles (about 10 - 11 fl oz each) using a funnel to pour the drink in.
Serve chilled.

10. Flaming Moe - The Simpsons

The 'official' recipe for the drink, as described by Homer, is quite vague: I decided to mix the little bits that were left in every liquor bottle. In my haste, I had grabbed a bottle of the kid’s cough syrup. It passed the first test: I didn’t go blind... I don’t know the scientific explanation, but FIRE MADE IT GOOD.

Ingredients

1 oz. (30ml) Vodka
1 oz. (30ml) Whiskey
3/4 oz. (22ml) Créme de Cassis
1/2 oz. (15ml) Blueberry Schnapps
1/2 oz. (15ml) Simple Syrup (Krusty's Non-Narkotik Kough Syrup for Kids)
Lemon Lime Soda
Splash Bacardi 151

Mixing Instructions

1. In a shaking glass with ice, combine vodka, whiskey, creme de cassis, blueberry schnapps, and simple syrup. Shake well.
2. Strain mix into a glass over ice and top with lemon lime soda.
3. Layer on a splash of Bacardi 151 or any overproof rum.
4. Ignite with a match and extinguish before drinking.
