Title: Pie and Flowers
Pairing/Characters: Massu/Kame, Tegoshi, Nakamaru
Rating/Warnings: G
Prompt: #32 "Where are you going with those pies boys?"
Summary: Massu’s sense of smell leads him into a new friendship.
A/N: I think I did stray a bit from the prompt, but there is pie and there is Massu in this so that should be good enough.
A big thank you to my beta L, and to the mod who gave me more time to finish this fic ♥

Massu is in the middle of playing Go Fish with Tegoshi when a delicious smell makes its way in through the open door. A couple of sniffs and Massu can tell it’s the smell of homemade apple pie with extra cinnamon. He drops the cards on the table and gets up from his chair.

“You won.” he says and makes it for the door.

“I did?” Tegoshi sounds confused but Massu doesn’t bother to reply. He needs to know where the smell comes from.

He sniffs the air as he twists his head to look for the pies. He spots a person way down the hall, just turning around a corner. He starts running.

“Hey! Wait up!” he calls, and the person stops and turns around.

It’s Kamenashi Kazuya.

“Masuda-kun?” Kamenashi looks slightly confused, but smiles at him nonetheless. “What can I help you with?”

Massu scratches the back of his head, eyeing the pie in Kamenashi’s hand. There’s still steam coming from it so it must’ve come out from the oven recently. He looks up from the pie. “I’m just… I mean, I was just…”

Kamenashi tilts his head. “Yes?”

“The scent from your pie reached me and got curious about it.” Massu says, resisting the urge to lick his lips. “What’s the occasion?”

“Oh?” Kamenashi looks down on at the pie and smiles again. “Nothing really, I just had some free time before I came to work.”

Just had some time over? Massu is surprised by the answer. He also wishes that Koyama, or Tegoshi or Shige, got wonderful ideas like that. Koyama had a period back in the days where he would bake cookies every now and then but that hasn’t happened for a few years now.

He sighs.

“You want some?” Kamenashi asks and Massu’s face brightens up. “It should be enough for six.”

Massu’s eyes light up with excitement and delight, making Kamenashi chuckle softly but Massu doesn’t get to reply because their conversation gets interrupted.

“Massu?” Tegoshi’s voice comes from further down the hallway. “It’s time to leave.”

Massu looks over his shoulder and Tegoshi’s not alone. Koyama and Shige’s turned up as well which means it’s time to leave for today’s photo shoot.

“Another time?” Kamenashi says when Massu turns back to him with a forlorn face.

The smile on Massu’s face makes a reappearance.

A couple of days later Massu has almost completely forgotten, about the encounter with Kamenashi and the pie. Kamenashi, on the other hand, has obviously not.

“Kame-chan wants to know what days and evenings you have free for the next few weeks,” Tegoshi says with his phone is pressed to his ear, but the question is directed to Massu and not the person on the other end of the line.

“Huh?” Massu gets confused at first but then he understands and quickly he reaches for the planner in his bag.

It turns out he has quite a lot of free time, considering their line of work. He rambles the dates and times to Tegoshi who in turn repeats them into the phone.

“Kame-chan says he’ll call back later so that you can set a date.” Tegoshi says a moment later and sticks his phone in his pocket. How it fits there is a mystery to Massu but he doesn’t pay it too much attention since he’s too busy thinking about the promising pie.

“I didn’t know you two were friends.” Tegoshi continues but he doesn’t seem to find it as strange as most people might have. He looks happy at the prospect.

“We’re not,” Massu replies because it’s the truth. They’re friendly but not friends, yet. “He’s just promised to treat me to pie.”

Tegoshi nods in understanding and then goes off to sparkle somewhere.

Kamenashi ends up inviting Massu over to his place the following Thursday afternoon for pie and afternoon tea.

“I should bring something with me, right?” Massu asks Nakamaru, while he looks through a rack of nothing but argyle sweaters. It’s Wednesday and Nakamaru brought him along after work for evening shopping.

“Hmm…” Nakamaru replies, his mind too occupied with critically studying the vest in his hand. “Yeah”

The vest is something Massu would never wear, the colours are too plain and there’s no fun pattern. Perfect for Nakamaru.

“Kamenashi-kun likes wine, right?” Massu continues to his questioning, even if it feels more like his talking to himself at the moment. “But…maybe it’s wrong to bring wine as a gift when you'll be eating pie. Tea or imported coffee might be better? What do you think?”

Nakamaru puts the vest away. “Just bring flowers.”

Massu isn’t too sure about that suggestion. Flowers are something you bring when you go on a date or to your mother on mother’s day. But maybe Kamenashi really would appreciate flowers. Nakamaru wouldn’t suggest it if he didn’t think it’d be the right gift.

Massu is sitting on the couch when Tegoshi comes in for work the next day. The smile on his face falters when he sees Massu and he walks straight up to him.

“Massu” Tegoshi starts and sighs. He looks really dejected.

Massu opens his mouth to reply but Tegoshi starts speaking again before Massu gets the chance to say anything.

“Kame-chan just called me and said he has to cancel your date this afternoon.”

Tegoshi sighs again.

“Oh” Massu says, feeling a bit dejected himself.

“But he promised to make up for it another day” Tegoshi continues and sits down next to Massu. He puts a hand on Massu’s shoulder and then rests his head against it.

“What’s that?” he then asks when he sees the flower magazine in Massu’s lap. Massu had picked it up in a newsstand on his way to work.

Massu looks down and then closes it. “Yuichi-kun said that flowers would be a good gift. You don’t happen to know what’s are Kamenashi-kun’s favourite flowers?”

Tegoshi grins in reply and grabs the magazine from Massu.

Weeks go by without Massu and Kamenashi being able to set a new pie date. The first week Massu kinds of thinks about it a lot, but then it slowly disappears to the back of his mind. It only ever pops to the front when Tegoshi or Nakamaru mentions Kamenashi one way or another. Both of them namedrop him more than usual, or maybe it’s because of the pie that Massu has started to notice just how much both of them actually talk about him.

Massu is busy packing up his things after a full day of work. Tomorrow is his birthday and he’s kind of childishly excited about it. The others have already left for the day so he is alone in the room when there’s a knock on the door.

“Come on in” Massu calls out and turns to face the door just in time to see Kamenashi walk inside.

“Masuda-kun!” Kamenashi smiles. “I’m happy to see you’re still here. I saw Koyama-kun leave earlier.”

Massu smiles back and then he notices something in Kamenashi’s hand. “Kamenashi-kun, is that what I think it is?”

“Yes,” Kame answers and lifts the pie to his nose and sniffs it. “I promised you pie and pie you will get.”

Massu’s stomach growls in anticipation.

They set the small table in front of the worn out green corduroy sofa with the plates and spoons Kame’s been smart enough to bring with him. The pie is an apple pie which smells heavily of cinnamon and cardamom, and looks delicious. Massu can’t help but lick his lips as he watches Kame cut a piece of it and puts it on the plate in front of Massu.

”Go on ahead,” Kamenashi says once he’s put a piece on his own plate.

”Itadakimasu!” Massu says excitedly and then he digs in. The taste is perfect. The strong tastes of the spices and the sweetness in the apples blend perfectly. It melts in his mouth like honey.

He turns to look Kamenashi straight in the eyes and gives him his biggest smile. “Delicious!”

Kamenashi laughs, his cheeks turning a bit red as if he’s slightly embarrassed by the comment. “Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

A few days later Massu sends Kamenashi a big bouquet of daisies.

The end.
