Hm, we have a pretty similar musical history. The first two albums I bought myself were Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and New Order's Substance. From there I went into Saint Etienne and Swing Out Sisters and other (then) guilty pleasures that pushed me more into electronica and even house music (which I totally hated the first few times I heard it at gay clubs; now I pretty much live with a constant 4/4 beat).
And I've always had a little subset of friends into the super-dark industrial and ethereal stuff too so I've always sorta kept up with it through them.
Oh yeah, jazz happened to me somewhere in there too...
But I have to say, country WHAT? Maybe you should put on a Beastie Boys album and try to break this before you sink too deep. The sound of old country is the most depressing thing in the world to me. I've never been sure if it's just really that bad or if it just reminds me a lot of my childhood or what. I'm sure it's about to come way back in vogue with that Cash movie and that cowboy movie though.
But maybe rockabilly boys will come back too. That would make it more tolerable.
