Ryuutaros Character: Jolyne Kujo (prisoner number FE40536, nicknamed JoJo - but only her mom and very close friends are allowed to call her that)
Series/Fandom: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Deviance: Deviance 1
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Canon Used: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6 - Stone Ocean
Appearance:
For reference, Jolyne is nearly always seen wearing
a long outer jacket with "G.D. st JAIL" written across the back. She has a star-shaped birthmark on her left shoulder, and
a tattoo of a butterfly with a knife through it on her left forearm. As she is never given a canon hair color (different official art has her hair colored in different combinations), I'm going with the light green + teal variation (see icons).
Psychology:
Jolyne is, first and foremost, a very strong-minded individual. She has a sharp tongue, a take-no-shit attitude and is known to not always obey authority. Assertive enough to border on aggression, she refuses to back down from any challenge and is always true to her word. She has a very strong sense of determination, can get a bit rude at times and has shown herself to be rather inventive through her various uses of her stand power. To those who wrong her or her friends, she is merciless and her temper can get pretty heated when provoked. Or just pretty heated in general, especially when things just don't seem to be going as planned.
Although she isn't always the best judge of character (as evidenced by her dealings with her cellmate Guess), she will believe whatever colors a person shows her. If they seem nice on first meeting, she will assume they're always a good person. If they seem like an ass on first meeting, she will assume they're always an ass. When this first impression is proven otherwise, her temperment toward the person will change accordingly. Unfortunately, she'll generally believe the best in people until the opposite is thrown in her face.
Jolyne's friends and family are very important to her as well. Likely the only person she shows respect toward is her mother, and despite her formerly rocky relationship with her father she has come to idolize him as well. Her frequently used phrase of 'yare yare da wa' (akin to 'gimme a break') is a more feminine version of her father's 'yare yare daze.' Jolyne will always do whatever she can to protect her friends or otherwise help them out of bad situations and she will never leave them behind, even at the risk of her own life. Generally this involves punching someone in the face or breaking out her stand power, but hey. That's what it's for, right?
Other Skills/Abilities:
Jolyne's primary ability is known as a 'stand' - hers is named Stone Free. As a result of her stand, Jolyne can literally unravel her body into strings whose movements and thickness she can manipulate. These strings can be used for a variety of purposes, such as forming a protective web, listening to distant conversations and confiscating items without being noticed.
Additionally, Stone Free has a physical presence which is only visible to other stand users (or those of the magic persuasion). While Stone Free isn't an overly strong stand, she makes up for it in speed and flexibility. Like Jolyne, she can also unravel, but is more commonly used to directly attack with her fists - her range is 1-2 meters. Jolyne generally summons Stone Free by calling her, but the two are connected and can unconsciously come forth when Jolyne is physically threatened. Think of Stone Free as a manifestation of Jolyne's spirit.
Stand abilities aside, Jolyne is a decent hand-to-hand fighter, though she likely wouldn't last for an extended period of time. She can also sense the presence of other stand users in her immediate vicinity.
Other Weaknesses:
The further away her stand is from her, the more it unravels and thus the less useful/powerful it becomes. Also, since the strings she uses are actually her body transformed, it can take a heavy toll on her if she unravels too much. Any damage sustained by Stone Free will equally affect Jolyne, and vice versa.
History:
Jolyne was born the daughter of Jotaro Kujo and an Italian-American woman. As Jotaro's work and investigations on stands frequently kept him away from his family, Jolyne grew up disliking her father immensely. She was, however, very close with her mother. At 14, she had already fallen in with a motorcycle gang. One day, she found a kid's wallet whose contents (a grand total of $5) she took, but the boy's father called the police and exaggerated the story. Panicking, Jolyne pulled the father and son out of their car and tried to make an escape. She was caught by the authorities and her relationship with her father worsened even further when he refused to pay her bail.
What followed were several years spent in and out of juvenile hall until she and her boyfriend Romeo were caught up in a staged hit-and-run. Scared and panicky, they hid the body in the trunk of Romeo's car - unaware that the man was still alive and the whole thing had been a setup. They dumped his body in a swamp, where it was unfortunately found by the authorities. Despite the fact that Romeo had been driving, Jolyne was the one charged. While waiting for her trial, she received an amulet from her father. When she opened it and pricked her finger on the stone inside, it granted her a stand power, but in her rage at having been sent anything from her father, she threw the amulet away. Her lawyer turned out to have been hired by Romeo's wealthy family to ensure that their little boy wouldn't serve any time. The lawyer tricked Jolyne into accepting a plea bargain, without fully telling her the charges, and as a result she was sentenced to 15 years in the level 4 security Green Dolphin Street Prison (nicknamed "The Aquarium")
Jolyne's cellmate, a woman named Guess, turned out to be a bit of a basket case. At their first meeting, she threw a stool at Jolyne to prevent her from using the bottom bunkbed, yet the next morning was friendly and apologetic. She dumped Jolyne's clothes in the sink overnight, causing Jolyne to miss her chance to get breakfast. When Jolyne accidentally noticed that something was off about Guess' pet bird, she grew suspicious and sought to separate the latter from the former. It turned out Guess had stumbled across the amulet Jolyne had discarded, and it had granted her a stand power as well - the power to change a person's size. Guess' bird was actually just the hollowed corpse of a bird, within which she had forced a shrunken security guard. Once Jolyne discovered this, however, Guess used her ability on her, forcing Jolyne to wear the hollowed corpse of a rat and become her new pet.
Guess used Jolyne to scout out a potential escape route, not knowing that the further away from her stand she was, the less power it would have over Jolyne. When a guard forced Guess away from the area, Jolyne slowly began returning to her original size and had to make a mad dash for the main body of the prison to avoid getting caught. Unfortunately, Guess' stand chased her and attempted to kill her... until Jolyne unconsciously activated her own stand, Stone Free. Her stand caught and heavily injured, Guess tried to bargain with Jolyne and then betrayed her by reducing Jolyne's size and pushing her into a restricted area for the guards to find. Using Stone Free, Jolyne beat up the already injured Guess, demanding to be returned to a smaller size to escape from the restricted area. Realizing she couldn't win, Guess complied and became something of Jolyne's syncophant.
It didn't take long for Jolyne to learn the ins and outs of The Aquarium, and to ge the hang of using her stand. At one point, she noticed a young boy in a baseball uniform playing in the hallway - which was strange, as she was in the women's section. The boy seemed to know her, and told her she would soon be having a visitor which she should not meet. He disappeared when she turned her head, leaving Jolyne horribly confused.
Despite the boy's warning, she went to meet her visitor, thinking it to be her mother. The man in the visiting room, however, was unfamiliar... until he said Jolyne's name and asked about her mother. Furious, Jolyne attacked the guard in the room, knocking him unconscious. She hadn't expected to see her father, and was even more surprised when he said he had come to get her out. He then told her of a prisoner in the men's section who was the mastermind behind the supposed hit-and-run she and Romeo had been involved in. This prisoner was a former follower of Jotaro's arch-nemesis, and thus was looking for a way to get back at Jotaro through Jolyne. However, before they could take even one step out of the room, they were attacked by another stand user who placed them in a dreamlike state via the use of cigarette smoke while slowing melting their bodies and the entire room. After finding a discrepancy within her dream, Jolyne was able to wake herself briefly and subsequently wake Jotaro. Through their combined efforts, they were able to escape from the room and head for the exit. Supposedly a submarine from the Speedwagon Foundation was waiting for them outside to aid their escape.
Before they could make it outside, however, they were attacked by two stands. Jotaro pushed Jolyne out of the way, taking the brunt of the damage himself, and it turned out he had been the target of the second stand, White Snake. White Snake used its ability to create and steal two 'discs' from Jotaro's body - one containing his stand, and the other containing his memories - and left him in bad shape. Heavily injured, Jotaro told Jolyne to escape, saying he would follow her shortly. After defeating the remaining stand, Jolyne dragged her father with her to the submarine. However, upon noticing that White Snake was returning to the prison building rather than escaping, she placed a now comatose Jotaro into the submarine alone and chose to remain in the prison to in order to retrieve the stolen discs and revive him.
After being re-captured, Jolyne was placed in solitary confinement for a time. Shortly after being returned to her usual cell, something very strange occurred in the swamplands outside the prison and five inmates were sent to investigate together with a group of guards. Among them were Jolyne and her fellow inmate and friend Hermes. They discovered a clue as to the whereabouts of Jotaro's discs, and went to search a shed just off the swampland. However, before they could get a good look, the guard demanded everyone return to the prison and Hermes noticed something odd... there were now six inmates among them. While the group tried to figure out the number change, the guard and one of the inmates were attacked and killed. Then Hermes and Jolyne were attacked by an unknown stand which turned out to have killed and taken over the bodies of the other inmates in the group as well.
The stand, calling itself Foo Fighters, was formed of self-aware plankton who had been given its stand ability and intelligence by White Snake. As such, Foo Fighters protected the collection of discs stored in the swampland shed out of gratitude. It fought Jolyne and Hermes, but they proved to be the stronger. However, Jolyne decided not to kill Foo Fighters and instead asked that it continue to guard the discs... only, to protect them from the likes of White Snake. Foo Fighters agreed, after hearing about Jolyne's father and motivations, and decided that it wanted to protect Jolyne as well. In the shed, Jolyne found the disc containing her father's stand and learned that the memory disc would likely be with White Snake's user.
Jolyne, Hermes and Foo Fighters returned to the prison, the latter disguised as one of the dead inmates, and Jolyne tried to think of a way to send her father's disc to the Speedwagon Foundation. Before she came up with any ideas, the trio were attacked by a new stand user who was looking to find the missing disc. After defeating her, Jolyne called the Speedwagon Foundation and together they set up a means of delivering Jotaro's disc so long as Jolyne could gain access to the courtyard between the men's and women's buildings.
The disc was stolen by another stand user who could remove gravitational force, but through the combined efforts of Jolyne and a new ally Weather Report, it was retrieved and successfully sent to the Foundation.
Jolyne's canon is currently after chapter 50.
Reality Description:
Jolyne lives in the the year 2011, in the United States, and it's essentially the same as the present day.
Green Dolphin Street Prison, where Jolyne resides, is located on a small island just off the coast of Florida. The island is thought to be covered in prisons, and outside the main prison buildings are farms and swampland - complete with crocodiles that are more than happy to snack on prisoners who get too close. The women's and men's sections are in separate buildings, with multiple levels of security and a courtyard between them, but look the same from the inside. Inmate cells are primarily on the second floor, while a variety of rooms are on the first: a music room, library, cafeteria, medical office, shower room, church, etc. Also accessible from the first floor is the exercise yard. The prison allows inmates to work on the neighboring farms or around the prison for a small amount of pay, and if you have money you can essentially get anything. There's even a small store inside the prison which sells all manner of things, from toiletries to rolex watches.
One main difference about Jolyne's reality is the existence of stands and stand users. Stands are essentially a representation of a person's spirit and as such are directly connected to the user. Some people are natural-born stand users, meaning they have had a stand since birth, while others become stand users through one of a couple of ways: one way is coming into contact with a certain stone, and the other is by being implanted with the stand of someone else via one of White Snake's discs. Stands have different abilties, depending on their user, and stand users are generally able to sense each other's presence.
Also notable is the Speedwagon Foundation, one of the largest research groups in the United States. It began as a giant oil company in the 1930s started by a friend of Jolyne's great-great grandfather. It has since helped out members of Jolyne's family in a variety of ways from the sidelines.
