Well I ran out of room but I wanted the title to be, "You Know Gill Has A Paper or is just generally curious When: Neopaganism and Spiritualism, Not To Be Confused with Satanism, and wtf is Thelemaism??"
Alright, as someone who is Agnostic with their own spirituality, even IIII Am sick of hearing about all this Harry Potter is evil because he does magic and shit and how it leads to craaaaazy debates about religion, and how all these crazy people call everyone else crazy satan worshippers. WELL, lets take a look at who believes in magic......
Popular Beliefs (whether correct or not): That paganism, neopaganism, and satanic beliefs all involve magic. True or False? Very false.
Satanism actually doesn't involve magic by the same definition as SOME variations of neopaganism do. It is viewed in Satanism as a personal choice, and there are rules and policies to adhere to. And not all neopaganistic beliefs involve magic. Spiritualism has nothing to do with magic whatsoever, and from what I've seen, doesn't really offer an opinion. (I mean when you really look at it, even the catholic church's view on it seems to state that it acknowleges that it is entirely possible and/or real...so....)Popular Belief: The pentagram, or pentacle, is evil, and a satanic symbol. True or False. False false false. So false. For ONE thing, a pentacle is just the star. The pentagram is in a circle. Secondly, a downward facing pentagram is a satanic symbol meaning it has the single point facing downwards. Wicca and some other non-satanic beliefs use an upward facing pentagram, with the single point facing up, with two on the bottom. Now, regardless of whether or not there is a circle, the satanic pentagram often includes a goat with or without horns inside the pentagram. The end.
I think the easiest way to clear up misconceptions between them will be to start with the most basic, which is Satanism. I say most basic because well, the views are pretty damn (haha) clean cut, with no if ands or buts, and there are no sects or branches off of it. It stands alone, has not actually been recognized as a "Religion" per se , and is very straight forward. This makes it the easiest to examine, as it won't take long. If you're curious for yourself, well
www.churchofsatan.com there ya go.
So Let us begin............................
Satanism
Satanism itself is not a religion, for some it simply a personal belief or viewing of a deity, the only recognized organization involved with satanism is "LaVey Satanism". Anton LaVey created the "Church of Satan".
an opening statement from the Church of Satan:
"Founded on April 30, 1966 c.e. by Anton Szandor LaVey, we are the first above-ground organization in history openly dedicated to the acceptance of Man’s true nature-that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos which is permeated and motivated by the Dark Force which we call Satan"
Okay, well, there you go, you have their view on Human Nature, something that under every religion it is questioned are people born good, evil, or neutral. Well, satanists say "carnal beast". Granted, cooler name, but a bit, err...different? Well, the pride within the group revolves around just that. Throughout the website, originally created by the original creator of the religion, Anton LaVey, it says "We Think Too Different".
A statement that made me giggle, as it is one of those statements found in any religion that claims to be correct above all others:
"We Satanists are our own Gods, and we are the explorers of the Left-Hand Path. We do not bow down before the myths and fictions of the desiccated spiritual followers of the Right-Hand Path."
Alright, well I will give you that if you "are your own God" then no, you're not worshipping something that may be a myth...However...This is where we find, as in most religions that make strong statements towards other ones, a conflict of their own interests... As, you cannot accept Satan as nothing more than a force, AS WELL as an actual being... But we'll see...
An absolutely fantastic quote from the site as an explanation to those who plan to join, it made me smile at how whoever wrote this, blatantly knew how people tend to view most religions and just whent pfft skrew community:
"A word to the wise: since Satanism is a philosophy which holds individualism as one of its main values, we don’t expect all of our members to agree on everything, or even to “get along” with each other. Thus, you are cautioned that you might find some differences of opinion in these discussions. Satanism, by definition, is a philosophy in which you won’t find “group hugs” as part of the repertoire."
damnit, and I wanted a satanic group hug.
Seems like every Religion also, in different words, states this:
"Those who proudly carry our red cards identifying themselves as members have the strength and dedication to implement the tools traditionally associated with Satan: the imagination to confound and confuse, the wisdom to recognize the unseen in our society, the pragmatism of a skeptic, and the passions of a classical Romantic soul."
What I was not expecting:
The Church of Satans Drug Policy :
"This is all quite simple. The Church of Satan does not condone illegal activities. If the use of certain drugs is illegal in your country of residence, they are just that: illegal.
Individuals who choose to ignore this and break the law do so at their own peril. Their actions as individuals shall not be construed as being sanctioned by the Church of Satan. Furthermore, they must pay the dire yet fully predictable consequences they have brought down upon themselves. The Church of Satan is not responsible for their actions, and will not be used as an excuse for their lawless behavior. Responsibility to the responsible. You make your own personal choice as to what you do as an individual. We make our own personal choices, as individuals, with regard to how we view you, based on the choices you make and your resultant behavior.
If a substance is legal, a Satanist may or may not choose to indulge in it. “Indulgence, NOT compulsion” is your guide. Since survival is the highest law, the Satanist will not ruin or poison his or her body, even if it is legal to do so. This is an important distinction. Self-destructive, suicidal hedonism-via whatever means-is ultimately un-Satanic as it threatens the very thing a Satanist holds most dear: his own life."
Now for the actual teachings!!!
Satanic Teachings
(The number of contradictions I have found from lack of explanation within this site is rediculous, as apparently teh drug policy is held seperate from the number one foundation of satanic belief...as you shall see here:)
The Nine Satanic Statements
- Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence
- Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams
- Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit
- Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates
- Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek
- Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires
- Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his "divine spiritual and intellectual development", has become the most vicious animal of all
- Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as the all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification
- Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years
ahahahahaha Ooookay, first of all WTF to #6, w t f . And also number 9 made me laugh a lot, because really they had 8, but just wanted to be smartasses so added number 9, and I have to say yes if you look at how the Church used to teach through fear, and no to how teaching now is based purely on Jesus loves me this I know. Anywho. Lets look at more satanism as really, I enjoy looking at any religion, although I don't think I'll ever take the time of day to read the Satanic Bible (yes it exits).
The Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth
- Do not give opinions or advice unless you are asked
- Do not tell your troubles to others unless you are sure they want to hear them
- When in another's lair, show him respect or else do not go there
- If a guest in your lair annoys you, treat him cruelly and without mercy
- Do not make sexual advances unless you are given the mating signal
- Do not take that which does not belong to you unless it is a burden to the other person and he cries out to be relieved
- Acknowledge the power of magic if you have employed it successfully to obtain your desires. If you deny the power of magic after having called upon it with success, you will lose all you have obtained.
- Do not complain about anything to which you need not subject yourself
- Do not harm little children
- Do not kill non-human animals unless you are attacked or for your food.
- When walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him.
Interesting. For the next part, I will include the quoted description from the site for those that are interesting or need it, but I'm trying to keep this short.
The Nine Satanic Sins
- Stupidity - The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It's too bad that stupidity isn't painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society trhives increasingly on stupidity...Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.
- Pretentiousness
- Solipsism - can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won't. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of "Do unto others as they do unto you". It's work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you.
- Self-deceit
- Herd Conformity - It's alright to conform to a person's wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.
- Lack of Perspective - Never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. See the patters and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints -- know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world. (well thats a little pretentious)
- Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies - Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it's something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.
- Counterproductive Pride - (I'm gonna sum up their explanation -- pride is great up until you take it too far. Their rule is 'if it works for you, great'. When it stops working for you however, dont paint yourself into a corner where the only way out is to say sorry. If you do, Say you're sorry, you made a mistake, you wish you could compromise somehow ) (huh)
- Lack of Aesthetics - aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one's own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied. An eye for beauty and balance is an essential satanic tool...blah blah needs to be applied for magic if you acknowledge it.
Huh, well, okay then. I mean, even I have to agree that most of those things are bad traits to have, just...their execution of how to deal with some things is skrewy. In my opinion anyways. Moving on.
Every organized group and/or religion needs a set of guidelines, as we saw above... But they also need goals, etc. Here is where I will end the part on satanism.
Pentagonal Revisionism: A Five-Point Program by Anton Szandor LaVey 1988
"In recent years, we’ve wasted far too much time explaining that Satanism has nothing to do with kidnapping, drug abuse, child molestation, animal or child sacrifice, or any number of other acts that idiots, hysterics or opportunists would like to credit us with. Now we’re ready for something that goes quite a few steps beyond just explaining our principles. Every revisionist movement needs a set of goals/guidelines that are clear, concrete, and that will effect significant changes.
The following Five-Point Program reflects attitudes which allow others to decide whether they wish to align themselves with Satanism or not. Each is necessary for Satanic change to take place. When asked what we’re “doing,” here’s the answer:
- Stratification - the point on which all others ultimately rest. There can be no more myth of "equality" for all - it only translates to "mediocrity" and supports the weak at the expense of the strong. Water must be allowed to seek its own level without interference from apologists for incompetence. No one should be protected from the effects of his own stupidity.
- Strict taxation of all churches - If churches were taxed for all their income and property, they'd crumble overnight of their own obsolescence, and the National Debt would be wiped out as quickly. The productive, the creative, the resourceful should be subsideized. So long as the useless and incompetent are getting paid, they should be heavily taxed.
- No tolerance for religious beliefs secularized and incorporated into law and order issues (he should just call this seperation of church and state) - to re-establish "Lex Talionis" would require a complete overturning of the present in-justice system based on Judeo-Christian ideals, where the victim/defender has been made the criminal. Amnesty should be considered for anyone in prison because of his alleged "influence" upon the actual perpetrator of the crime. Everyone is influenced in what he or she does. Scapegoating has become a way of life, a means of survival for the unfit. As an extension of the Judeo-Christian cop-out of blaming the Devil for everything, criminals can gain leniency, even praise, by placing the blame on a convenient villain. Following the Satanic creed of "Responsibility to the responsible", in a Satanic society, everyone must experience the consequences of his own actions - for good or ill.
- Developement and production of artificial human companions - The forbidden industry. An economic "godsend" which will allow everyone "power" over someone else. Polite, sophisticated, technologically feasible slavery. And the most profitable industry since T.V. and the computer. (aka robots that can do stuff for you).
- The opportunity for anyone to live within a total environment of his or her choice, with mandatory adherence to the aesthetic and behavioral standards of same -- Privately owned, operated and controlled environments as an alternative to homogenized and polyglot ones. The Freedom to insularize oneself within a social milieu of personal well-being. An opportunity to feel, see, and hear that which is most aesthetically pleasing, without interference from those who would pollute or detract from that option.
This is the encapsulated version of the current thrust of Satanic advocacy. So when someone asks you, “Well, what do Satanists do?”, you will be qualified to tell him."
well then..
So there you go, Satanism 101. woot..? lolz Anyways, if you've never seen a picture of Anton LaVey, it's worth looking up, as many journalists have pointed out that even followers of the occult, whether it be LaVey's or not, see that his face resembles most people's concept of "the Dark Prince".
Now, why do neopagans, spiritualists, and believers in the occult often strongly dislike LaVey? Because of the spin he has put on the phrase "black magic" or "dark magic". As well as the negative connotations having someone who preaches about Satan be reffered to as a "witch" in many magazine and newspaper articles, gives to the very titles of "Priest" "Priestess" "Witch" and "Magic", and their origins.
This leads me to my next Rant..........
Magic
Magic! Sounds sweet! Well, there are TONS of different interpretations on magic within religions and outside of them within the occult, and outside of those with just, some theories and ideas here and there. As for me, I say well, I have no idea what humans are capable of, nor how we are defining magic. From what i've seen of many neopaganistic sects, "magic" is more a prayer in a physical manifestation, as a symbol for what is being asked, such as protection or healing. The act itself must be carried out by the person, not a spell, so in effect, the spell is working the same way a person praying does... Faith. When it comes to satanism, I got bored looking for, and in the time I spent looking didn't find much as to the views or use of magic beyond that it was a personal choice and ability that not all experienced. Well, okay then, so where's the problem, well to quote an article about Anton LaVey and "Black Magic", it said:
"As in the case in both White and Black Magic, it is the end in which it is directed that makes the difference, the White Magic practitioner supposedly infusing his will with love and devotion toward a spiritual ideal, while the will of those involved in Black, is said to be motivated by feelings of resentment, lust and greed. It is for this reason that magic is considered by many to be dangerous. The very sins set forth as "deadly" by the Christian faith have become part of the Satanist's creed. Envy is viewed by LaVey...as viewing the possessions of others in a favorable light. Envy and greed are seen by him as the motivating powers that trigger ambition without which there would be very little if any progress toward achieving personal goals."
Okay, so within, and I mean ONLY within Satanism, Black magic is based on greed, lust, etc... What to them, is considered a motivation, not a sin. So Sure, to them it's all fine and dandy, everone else is like well this sucks, and I don't blame them. However, I mean, if a book has magic in it, that isn't glorifying such things... Then who gives a crap???? I mean, if a satanist wrote a harry potter book, anyone using something resembling "white magic" would suck, as it is supposed to be healing, and good, blah blah. Spiderman, with great power comes great responsibility. either side could be good or bad as long as your writer isn't you know, trying to curse all the readers into turning into pigs and such, and honestly, it doesn't sound like this is what they mean when they say "magic". So what DOES magic mean? I'm sure that's going to vary epending on who's asked... oy vey. So confuzzling.
If you happen to be wanting to know LaVeys thoughts on this stuff, and how this whole summoning demons thing apparently is NOT true, well go to the Interviews and news and history and oh you know what just click on the damn link way up there. Don't worry the site's not scarey, or even formal. if anything, it's Hot Topic- esque.... :P
No disrespect meant to anyone who may stumble upon this and be a Satanist, I am simply scouring through all sorts of religions, and believe me I am skeptical of all of them.It is my belief that no matter what someone's beliefs, they are perfectly capable of being a perfectly decent human being, friend, or family member. it is only when religion infiltrates day to day life to the point where someone is not making their own decisions that I become negative towards someone in thsoe regards.
NEXT!
Neopaganism
