herodotus st. collingsworth, gentleman adventurer

the mid-winter blues have swept through me with a most vicious chill factor. i'm frozen baby, fer sure. thankfully, i was able to work my way through everything with a judicious amount of retail therapy. i purchased another cd from itunes.

phoenix is a band who, apparently transitioned themselves from this new wave/electronic to the type of straight forward garage band rock that i truly enjoy, only not. and they're french! it's like discovering tahiti 80 all over again, only not, because the sound is very different. the love, though, the love is the same.

i use the music to transition the post into a sheepish account of my first paper of the semester. the three page one that's not even 10 percent of my grade. the one i woke up early this morning to rewrite because it wasn't perfect and it has to be better than great, cooler than cool, because i would like a good letter of rec. the paper that set in motion events most tragic, but i will relate them to you, my friends. the paper that caused me to speak to a professor after class. i don't like approaching people after class. i had a very odd experience with that once and have since retreated into the tried & true structure of protocol that i feel most comfortable with, meaning you have authority so you're over there and i am over here, in my bubble.

(\o/) <--inside the bubble
() >:E <---outside the bubble

but the paper and my minor freak brought home the realization (again) that the bubble must be dropped. i have to work for the rec. this means speaking to and interacting with the professor somewhat outside of class. so i went to speak to him (not about my neurotic behavior or the fact that the paper should have been 3-5 pgs) but an actual conversation. or an almost sorta one to test my own comfort boundaries. the conversation is as follows:

me: hey! i got a vague question about something you said in class but i have totally forgotten the nifty point i wanted to make in the face of your paying attention to what i have to say
him: okay. is this what you're asking?
me: sure. but now your hand gestures are mesmerizing me. show me more!
him:
*indicates pillars of religious cross pollination*
*stairways of objectivity*
*alters to and against herodotus*
*a giraffe*
me: thanks! that totally answered another question, i think. oh! and thank you for resending the syllabus
him: you're welcome. thank you for participating in class.
me: *mumble*
*not to be out done in kindness*
have a nice weekend & enjoy grading your papers
*scurries*
him: now there's that sarcasm....

music makes the people come together, school daze
