Allova's Amazing Wellington Adventure - Part 5

Feb 07, 2010 01:31

Okay, it's been two weeks so I really need to wrap this up. The final day of my amazing Wellington adventure!

We slept in on Monday, I woke up about ten am to hear amphigori talking quietly on the phone to Norm, saying "She's still asleep! I don't want to wake them!" so I waved to let her know I was up. We made arrangements to go to Scorch Bay which was at the opposite end of Wellington to where I'd previously hung out, and was my first visit to that end of the city. The cafe we went to was mixed - the food was good and the menues were funny, but they were distinctly unhappy with us trying to get our party of ten in there. What, they don't want our business? It ended up being amphigori and her partner, me and Tigger, Nikki and Muppet, Blair, Bryn, his wife and two children, Norman and Ants. Okay, so maybe we were a party of thirteen. Still with that and the 20% freaking public holiday surcharge I'm sure we more than made their trouble worthwhile.

After we finished having breakfast (which admittedly was big enough to last us till dinner) we wandered outside where all the boys proved their manliness by climbing up the climby thing, then we sat on the beach and gossiped for a while. After the wind had chilled me thoroughly (I do not deal well with the cold at the best of times, least of all when I am ill dressed for it) I suggested we move on to our next destination, which was the Weta Cave. Weta, as in the special effects company, not the big bug. The Weta Cave is a bit like a museum-gift shop, and we spent a lot of time oggling the pretties. We got bogged down in the Dr Grordbort's steampunk weaponary section, drooling over the sexy steampunk weapons. I fell in love with a $9000 metre long ray gun which is unusual as I don't normally fall in love with weaponary. I also eyed up one of the little ladylike ray pistols and wished I had this sort of fire power on Saturday. Steampunk is rapidly growing on my sense of aesthetics. We watched the 20 minute little video they had going and at one point Norm cried out "That's my shot!" at a clip from the Waterhorse (he works for Weta Digitial, very cool)

After we wrapped up at the Weta Museum, I put my foot down and insisted we go to my favourite gelato store, the one place I make a point of visiting every single time I'm in Wellington. So we went back to the centre city waterfront and went to the gelato store there. Everyone was just humouring me (I hadn't shut up about the gelato since we frickin' landed) but as soon as they had their gelatos and tasted them, they all said "Anna, you were so right." Yay! We finished our gelato then sprawled in the nearby park in the brief moments of sunshine that occured that day. Bryn and I had a long discussion about what styles of game you could have for a big Kapcon flagship, whether factions were necessary, what sort of appeal it needs to have, while the others larked about the with the children who were having a ball with all the attention.

As it grew overcast again, we went to the Museum of City and Scene which was as amazing as Jackie promised. We watched the hologram movie and browsed the relics of Wellington past, but we only had about half an hour before they closed so we didn't get a very good look around. Next time! After that, we went our seperate ways. We went back to amphigori's place to collect our bags and bid farewell to the cats. We then bid farewell to her partner and she drove us to Bryn's, where we had a cup of tea and a bit of a sit down before we went to the airport. Ants dropped Nikki and Muppet off, while amphigori dropped me, Tigger and Blair off. We said goodbye at the airport then checked in, waited for a bit, and boarded. The flight was uneventful, I got to see our bags being loaded onto the flight from my seat ("HEY I CAN SEE OUR BAGS THEY'RE ON THE PLANE...OH MUPPET THEY DROPPED YOURS!") and then there wasn't any trivia questions this time so we made up our own. Before we knew what was what, we landed in Auckland, and that was the end of our great Kapcon 2010 adventure.

You know what my first thought was when we walked out of Auckland airport? "Oh that's right. It's summer in this city!"

Fin.

Massive thanks to all our Wellington friends, both the existing ones and all our new ones, especially my hosts amphigori and her partner. Being so welcomed into your community was a great experience, and I can't wait to come visit and roleplay with you all again.

Kapcon 2011, here we go!

(Also is anyone else having problems with LJ not loading properly? It's all wonky!)
