Ch. 3 “You and I”
The next day at glee Rachel walked directly to the open seat next to Puck, ignoring Finn’s confused look.
“So I have a few songs picked out for us to begin rehearsing,” the she said pulling out her notebook.
“I’m sorry Berry, are you actually speaking to me?” Puck asked with bite.
“Look Noah,” she explained, “I’m sorry about how I acted before. Mr. Schue is right, we can sing a great duet together if we put our minds to it.”
“If you say so,” he rolled his eyes.
“Noah,” Rachel took his hand and he turned to her, “I’ve realized that singing with you won’t threaten my relationship with Finn. And with that issue out of the picture I…I want to sing with you, Noah.”
“Well,” he paused then asked with a smile, “what songs were you thinking of?”
A huge smile spread across her face as she let go of his hand grabbed her notebook and began talking a mile a minute at him.

After spending the entire class period narrowing down Rachel’s two page long list of songs the two of them had decided to rehearse in the choir room after school later that day.
It was 3:29 and he hadn’t shown up yet. She was standing in the choir room alone staring at the clock and having flashbacks to over a year ago when she wasn’t expecting him to walk through that door at 3:30.
But as soon as the big hand hit six he strutted into the room, hands in his pockets.
“Do you show up early for everything, Berry?”
“Punctuality is something I pride myself in Noah,” she responded striding towards the pile of sheet music on the piano.
“Yeah,” he said following her, “but being early isn’t the same as being punctual.”
She gave him a half-hearted glare while gave her a smirk in response.
“So did you decide on one song yet?” he asked looking at the huge amount of paper stacked on top of the piano.
“Not exactly, but I decided on one that we could start with that is pretty fun, and you’d get to play guitar,” she handed him a few pages of sheet music.
“Awesome,” he said taking it and looking it over, “doesn’t seem too hard.” He walked across the room to grab a guitar and then began to strum the chords to the song, getting the rhythm down. Once Rachel thought he had it down, she began singing to him.
Don’t you worry there my honey,
We might not have any money
But we’ve got our love to pay the bills.
She moved closer to him, playfully elbowing him in the stomach.
Maybe I think you’re cute and funny
Maybe I wanna do what bunnies do with you if you know what I mean.
She turned from him and sang to no one in particular.
Let’s get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Let’s get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
She then turned around quickly, her skirt billowing with air, and sang back to Puck
.
Let’s get rich and build a house on a mountain making everybody look like ants
From way up there you and I you and I.
Now Puck began to sing.
Well you might be a bit confused
She sang back playfully punching him on the arm.
And you might be a little bit bruised
He smiled as he sang the rest of the verse back to her.
But baby how we spoon like no one else
And I will help you read those books
If you will soothe my worried looks
They harmonized together. Rachel didn’t stop smiling or take her eyes off of Puck for the remainder of the song.
And we will put the lonesome on the shelf
Let’s get rich and buy our parents homes in the south of France
Let’s get rich and give everybody nice sweaters and teach them how to dance
Let’s get rich and build a house on a mountain making everybody look like ants
From way up there you and I you and I
Once the final chord finished sustaining Rachel let out an excited squeal and clapped giddily.
“Noah that was fantastic!!!”
He couldn’t help but smile, “Yeah it was pretty good.” He slung his guitar over his shoulder, trying to seem nonchalant.
“We are so going to win this!!!” she beamed, throwing her arms around his neck. He laughed and stumbled back a step before hugging her back. She pulled away from him locking eyes when their faces were mere inches apart. She froze she couldn’t look away from him.
“Should we do it again?” Puck asked.
She swallowed. He wanted to date again? Or maybe just make out again probably. She was exactly what she wanted to avoid. She quickly released her arms from around his neck and took a few steps back.
“What?” her voice cracked a little.
“Should we practice the song again?” he said with a confused look.
“Oh!” she sighed in relief, “Yes,” Rachel gave a quick nod, all business now, “we have to perfect this. Also, you were a little off key in the second verse.”
“I’ve never heard this fucking song in my life Rachel.”
“Well then we’ll have to work on your sight-reading skills as well,” she snatched the sheet music of the amp where Puck had set it.
He sighed. It had been fun for a while.

Everyone had gotten into the competitive spirit in glee club the next day. As soon as each member entered the room they immediately found their partner and retreated to a corner or other secluded spot of the room to talk and quietly rehearse until Mr. Schue arrived.
Well everyone except Quinn because Kurt was out sick that day. But instead of sitting alone, she was floating around the choir room chatting with each pair.
“Shit!” Puck yelled from his and Rachel's spot by the drum set as his guitar string snapped.
“Noah!” Rachel shrieked as she jumped from his outburst.
He rolled his eyes and mumbled a string of profanities as he got up and lugged his guitar across the room to get another string from the supply closet.
Once he made it to the other end of the room Quinn approached Rachel. The blonde looked over to where Puck was standing and back to Rachel.
“So what’s up with you and Puck?” she asked raising an eyebrow.
“Oh God, she saw us in the choir room yesterday didn’t she?” Rachel thought.
“There is absolutely nothing ‘up’ with Noah and I,” she laughed nervously.
“I meant with the duet, Rachel,” Quinn responded narrowing her eyes, “Like, what song are you guys singing?”
“Oh!” Rachel smiled, “well we’re singing this perfect song that I myself picked out called -“
Before she could utter the title Puck suddenly appeared behind her and quickly covered her mouth with his hand.
“There’s no way we’re telling you what we’re singing Fabray.”
“What did you think I was going to do, cheat with your song?” Quinn responded with disgust.
“This is a competition,” he pointed out.
“Whatever,” the blonde rolled her eyes and walked away moving on to Brittany and Finn, certainly those two would be more apt to tell her something.
Puck removed his hand from Rachel’s mouth.
She looked up at him, “Noah I didn’t know you felt so strongly about this competition…”
“Even you should know I love free food, Berry.”
She looked down, of course that was why he wanted to win. Not to sing with her at Regionals. She regretted ever letting that thought cross her mind.
