It's a boy

Who: Jon Crane, Hush
Where: Arkham Asylum
What: Delivering the ~good news about the fabled Test Results. Or not.

Jon felt sick to his stomach. This would definitely be the worst part of the whole damn thing- sure, the moment when Lex welcomed him into the office looking grim was bad. Hearing his restrained hesitation as he told Jon the results of the karyotype was slow horror. The first time he heard himself force a lie to Harvey's face- and seeing his joy at the "good news" had been worse. But all that paled in comparison to this.

Yeah, Harvey someday realizing Jon's lie would be painful, and dealing with the inevitable influx of pity from everybody would be worse. Harvey loved him, maybe even more than he had loved Crane- but Harvey had loved before, and he could love again. Somehow, breaking Harvey's heart would be easier than breaking Hush's.

Lying to him would be even worse. But Jon couldn't bear to tell him the truth- not now, not today. Seeing the grief twist his grizzled face was more than Jon could bear to think about right now. He would tell the truth eventually- probably sooner than later- since everybody would find out whether he told them or not. Premature aging isn't exactly easy to hide. But until he came to terms with his own loss, he simply wasn't ready to handle anyone else's.

He silently followed the nurse through the all-too-familiar hallways, having requested a special visit in the privacy of Hush's cell rather than the normal visiting area. When he saw the door to the block Hush's cell was in, the nervous vise gripping his stomach twisted tighter.

Okay, he thought. Here goes nothing.
