Summary: Hotch gets sick before Christmas. Hotch/Reid

Hotch is the absolute worst at being sick. He’s cranky, whiny, and all together unpleasant to be around. When Reid wakes up to his lover shaking under the pile of blankets, he grimaces, rolls out of bed, and goes to make some tea. Jack is already up watching Saturday morning cartoons.

“Good morning, Jack.”

Jack turns his head and waves; it’s been three weeks since Reid moved in with them, and Jack is adjusting pretty well. Jack has been accepting of their relationship from the beginning, but Reid still wonders if Jack will ever accept him as part of the family.

Reid makes the tea and carries it up the stairs, hands it to Hotch who is groggily rubbing his eyes, and heads downstairs to make breakfast. He makes toast for Hotch and scrambled eggs and sausage for him and Jack.

“I’ll take it upstairs to Dad,” Jack offers quietly as Reid spreads butter on Hotch’s toast.

“Thank you,” Reid says, handing Jack the plate.

Jack returns and they eat in relative silence.

“What would happen if Dad died? Would I have to go live at Aunt Jessica’s apartment forever?” Jack asks suddenly. Reid sputters on his coffee.

“Your dad isn’t going to die Jack; it’s only a cold,” Reid assures and Jack doesn’t look appeased but more down-trodden, “It will all be fine.”

“You wouldn’t let me live with you,” Jack asks quietly.

“Would you want to live with me?” Reid responds shocked.

“Well maybe,” Jack replies softly.

“If you’d like to.”

“Thanks.”

After they clear their plates, Reid heads upstairs to check on Hotch.

“How are you feeling?” Reid asks soft and Hotch’s eyes don’t leave the TV as he harrumphs exasperatedly.

“I hate being sick,” Hotch mumbles as he comes out of a coughing fit.

“I know.”

“I got tired just getting up to go to the bathroom.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I wanted to go get the Christmas tree today; I wanted to do it for Jack before a case got in the way.”

“We’ll go another day, Aaron, it will be fine.”

“I wanted this to be a good holiday experience for Jack since it’s the first with you as a part of this family. I wanted to solidify that we are a family,” Hotch rages as another coughing jag hits.

“Aaron, everything will be alright. Stop worrying it’s not healthy,” Reid soothes as he offers Hotch a glass of water.

Hotch snorts and flips aggressively through the channels. He settles on a documentary of Jesus’s life.

“Jack asked me what would happen if you died.”

“I’m not going to die.”

“I know that, but he asked if he could live with me.”

Hotch looks at him his eyebrows knitted together.

“I said if he wanted to; I thought you should know.”

“Now that makes me feel better than any medicine.”
There’s a patter of feet and Jack slides into the master bedroom, “Dad, Spencer, Elf is on,” Jack sidles up between them and when Hotch tells him not to get too close, he leans his head against Reid’s side and burrows under the blankets.
