Money May Be the Root, but Lies Are a Fertilizer

Today's review: The Heiress.

I was drawn to The Heiress because all evidence pointed to it being a period piece. I was hoping for a lot of pretty costumes and social graces, perhaps with a nice romance thrown in. What I got instead was a movie that’s simultaneously interesting and one I’m left kind of uncertain about.

I love this movie. It's so emotionally complex and fascinating. I don't know if I agree with you that Catherine ended up as a cold woman in the end. I think she simply ceased to be a pushover, trying to please everyone. And frankly, I still regard her rejection of Morris as a triumph of character.

Yeah, the ending may be a matter of opinion for many people. I guess I saw the combination of her "leading Morris on" just as an act of revenge (albeit completely understandably; I don't want her to get back together with him either) and the fact that she refused to see her dying father even though he's asking for her (again, understandable given what he said, but still pretty brutal) as being pretty cold-hearted and a complete 180 of how she had been previously. I can see how you say this is her ceasing to be a pushover, but I wish we could see more examples of kind people continuing to be kind to those who deserve it while standing up for themselves politely but firmly, instead of resorting to the tricks of those who pushed them around.
