Das Beste: Falling Blind

And lovers will die, and lovers will rise
after the darkness we’ve seen,
so stop telling lies and start falling blind
in the deepest of seas.
‘Goodbye to Radio’, Hawksley Workman.

It’s hard to explain how silences are different. Omi was thankful that he didn’t actually have to say out loud how something as silence could be tiring, but he was also sad that the one person that would’ve understood was unable to do so.

Before the accident, he never feared silences with Yuuri; never felt he had to speak to avoid having the silence cling to them. Silence hadn’t been that before. Now he doesn’t speak because he feels like an intruder, knows that Yuuri feels the same, even if Yuuri hasn’t told him that. He knows him well enough to understand the distant look his eyes have.

“Don’t you get tired?” Yuuri asked suddenly, almost startling him. Omi closed the book he has been trying to read for half an hour and looks towards Yuuri. The other boy hadn’t looked up from where he has been petting Aiko, barely slows the soft caresses to the cat’s long fur.

“About?”

“Me.” Yuuri shrugged. “Before… we… I mean, okay, before you saw something in me, but that’s not here anymore, or… dunno, it’s hidden or... I mean…”

“You’re my best friend.” Omi said softly. “Before anything, before everything else. What I see in you it’s still there.” The ‘it’s you who doesn’t see anything in me’ is left silent, but Omi saw Yuuri wince and he opened his book again and tried to read.

After a couple of minutes in that heavy silence, he heard Yuuri’s voice again.

“You didn’t answer.”

He pretended he didn’t hear. Yuuri didn’t press him about it.
