Sacrifice.
They were supposed to be two, no matter what. It has always been 'the Elric brothers', plural, a pair. Those boys creating troubles, those traveling brothers.
It was never supposed to be just one.
They never even contemplated another possibility. They'd both search for the philosopher's stone, they'd both get a cure, they'd both be great alchemists and then... then they'd go back home.
His body feels strange now, without the metal, but not in the ways he'd have expected. It's heavier, for one thing. He never expected that. He always thought that once he'd be freed of his metal limbs, he'd be almost able to soar. Nowadays even the sky feels heavy.
Maybe it's because he didn't have a chance to say 'no'. He would've said no, but his brother chose.
It hadn't been his choice, but he had taken it anyway. He tries not to feel angry at that, but fails. After a while, it doesn't really matter, and he ignores the anger for something else. Melancholy, loneliness, pick your poison.
Winry tries to cheer him up, even when she's also sad. It's not as if he's not living. His brother's life for his? He wouldn't be as stupid as letting that rott away, even if sometimes he wishes he could, just to go and hit him for being so stupid, for leaving everything on his shoulders. He isn't that strong, not on his own.
He never looks at the mirror. He trusts on Winry to tell him if his hair -it's longer than before - is tangled, or if he has something on his face. He fears that he'll see himself and see his brother's murderer.
At night, when he should be sleeping, he tries to find comfort on his brother's words. 'We'll still be together' he had said when they had been at the Door. 'Nothing will ever change that.'
Every night he tries to convince himself that it's the true but, when just the silence answers him, he knows it. They were never supposed to be just one.
