We stared at the sun And we made a promise A promise this world, Would never blind us
They don't actually say it like that, but both Luke and Thalia are pretty much wowed that tiny, seven-years-old-gaping-tooth-on-the-front Annabeth managed to survive almost two months on her own before they found her. Not because their new tiny-adopted-sister isn't all kinds of amazing, but because just one month on the run and it's been hardfor them, and they're five years older.
But even if she did so, she is still exhausted. The first nights, when they've not won her trus yet, she keeps the barely sleeping that Thalia remembers she did before meeting with Luke, before they could take turns. After a week, however, Annabeth finally sleeps deeply and soundly, her tiny hand still around the knife Luke gave her. She falls asleep with her head on Luke's legs, and Thalia would make fun of the way he's painstakingly untangling Annabeth's curly hair with his fingers if the memory of Jason sleeping like that with her didn't make her chest ache.
"This's gonna take me a while," Luke says, giving her a smile. He has fallen for Annabeth, hard and fast. Thalia probably would've fallen just as hard if not for the pain of her lost little brother. "I'll take the first turn, wake you up in a few hours."
"Wake me up if anything happens," she says, shrugging, using one of the backpacks as a makeshift pillow.
"Don't worry, Thalia," Jason says, his smile widenning into a grin. "I'll take care of you, guys."
Thalia snorts, amused and fond as she rolls to her side, not letting herself tell Luke that yeah, she knows.
And we made a promise
A promise this world,
Would never blind us
