One of the things I'll never understand is the need to bash something to say something is better. It just doesn't make sense to me. Is it that you - general you, of course - feel so threatened by B that the only way you can like A is if you make sure everyone knows B is shit?
Seriously, that's the level of how much you like A?
It seems, to me, when I read things like that or when I'm told 'x >>>>>>>>>> y' that it's not so much that you like Y more, but that you just don't want anyone to like x which is. Er. Lame and stupid.
(Yes, I'm talking about shipping, partly, but also about general stuff.)
I don't remember who said this - I want to say Neil Gaiman, but then again, I always want to say Neil Gaiman said stuff - but this person said that one of the worst ways to give a critic about something is 'I usually don't like this, but this is the exception' because then the first taste you are giving about whatever it is you want to recommend is of distaste.
I think it's something similar, when the only way you have of showing your preference for a ship/series/book/whatever is through bashing. I, at least, have a REALLY hard time of liking stuff if the other part is bashing. It's worse when I like something and then I'm pretty much told that I'm an idiot for liking it because it's SO PAINFULLY OBVIOUS that the other side is better. I don't know about you, but I like not feeling like an idiot for liking what I like.
Seriously, people. You want to draw people to your ship? BE SMART ABOUT IT. Don't insult the intelligence of other people who may or may not join you. Instead of saying stuff like 'He was so disgusted that he was being paired with C rather than with B' which, again, gives a general aura of distaste to your preferred ship, write something ONLY about your ship, or something where the RESPECT for the other side is shown.
Remember the old say. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Or just ignore them. If you're so sure about your shipping being TEH BEST!11!!, why the hell do you need to prove it? That, to me, sounds like you think your ship sucks and that you have to bash the other one because you know it's best.
Of course, that might be just me.
