Patriotic stirrings
To those who don't know me as well as others, it may surprise you to know that I am highly patriotic. I love this country and the ideals it stands for with a ferocity that surprises even myself. Sometimes I grouse about politics, but deep down inside, I am intensely proud to be an American (though often I am not proud of my compatriots, because some of them can be quite doltish, like an uneducated younger brother intent on telling fart jokes in the foyer at church).
Every year reminded of my profound sense of gratitude for all the things that the people of this country have done so that I can be free to lead my life. It is a hard feeling to express. I know sometimes it seems that no one really appreciates what we have in this country, but I do, and it can move me to tears of happiness, if I dwell on it too much. This country was founded on a beautiful dream, and I love both the dream and what we really have, even if it is flawed.
