Jail for saving lives?

Rescuing asylum seekers from a sinking boat or imminent danger or sending money to help refugees, for no financial gain at all, could land people in jail if the Rudd government has its way: http://www.theage.com.au/national/people-smuggling-proposals-blasted-20100427-tq3n.html

Not surprisingly, not a squeek of protest from the opposition - you would think that the most valuable role of the opposition is in fostering debate and bringing to light government lunacies, but obviously you'd be wrong. Tweedledum and Tweedledee have no need to debate extreme laws or to make sure the public knows about them. Rushing them through in secret is just fine - after all Howard did it for over a decade. No reason why Rudd shouldn't be taking a page out of that book, right?
