Writer's Block: You're a Winner!

1.) When I was 7 years old, I won a contest in Ranger Rick magazine. There was a picture of an animal made up of all different pieces of animals (a bird's beak, an alligator's tail, a zebra's legs, etc.). You had to submit a response saying what all of the animal parts were. Several winners got a book, The Unhuggables, which was about animals that most people think are scary or gross.

2.) When I was 8 years old, my poster was chosen in a schoolwide poster contest because our town was named "Tree City USA." My poster depicted all of the things trees are good for. You could see that it was a habitat for animals, provided shade, provided recreational activity (a girl was swinging form a branch), etc. It was a big surprise when it won, because I recall I did it during lunch time because I had somehow missed some art classes and my teacher strongly wanted me to enter.

Then there was a dry spell during which I didn't win anything...

3.) When I was 23, I won a 2-gallon fish tank at my Aunt Linda's high school's "Tricky Tray." Basically you buy tickets and try for various prizes. Usually we never won anything. However, winning that fish tank was the greatest thing because I of all people could use it and have fun with it! Unlike the other contests listed here, this one had a paid entry, so I am not sure if it counts. Still I got a lot of wonderful years out of that tank! Only recently did I have to get rid of it because it was not working.

4.) When I was 25, I won a Starbucks gift card in a "door prize" drawing at the Gallery Systems annual Christmas party!

I have also occasionally won from $1 to $5 in scratch-off lottery tickets.
