Lately, I have been feeling influenced by things through a degree of separation. That's not exactly the proper wording. I have noticed the influence of things that I have not directly experienced. Examples of the moment being John Hughes and Woody Allen movies. Up until fairly recently, I had never seen any of the classic John Hughes movies (basically everything from the 80s) or any Woody Allen movies. And yet I seem to have some kind of connection to these movies based on...I don't even know. I knew exactly what a Woody Allen movie was like before I ever saw one. It just seems odd to me, to be aware of something like that before ever experiencing it. And I knew all about The Breakfast Club before I saw it, and when i finally sucked it up and watched it, I liked it more than I expected but it was exactly what I knew it was.
But I suppose this happens all the time. Does culture permeate to that degree? Does enough parody give you enough of the real thing to feel as though you have experienced it before?
So King Crimson has come up randomly several times recently. I think its a sign that I should give in and just get the whole album. I acquired most of it at some point, but it's missing my favorite song. Which really just makes me too irritated to listen to the bits I do have.
First major instance: I was an art exhibit with a friend and the artist put up all these albums that influenced his work. Yoshitomo Nara has some really awesome stuff, especially if you grew up with punk rock...which no one reading this did (to my knowledge anyway).
Second major instance: Kanye fucking sampled it on his new album. I actually really hate where he cut the sample from because it misses my favorite part, but musically it does makes sense. Part of the reason I think Kanye is so popular is because he takes a lot from other genres, which has become really popular with hip hop, but was really not popular not too long ago. And King Crimson, one of the progenitors (am I even using that word right?)of prog rock, were also awesome for the way they put together rock and jazz and other genres.
Moving on to British television shows. Coupling is hilarious. It's on netflix, watch that shit because it's awesome. It's basically all about sex. One of the main characters is now in Leverage. But yes, very funny show. As is the IT Crowd if I haven't already yelled at you until you watched it.
Well thats my life these days. That and sleeping 4 hours a night because I keep coughing so much. I'm assuming it will either go away or I will pass quietly into the night.
Disgusting Bachelor Frog, if you were not aware.
