Someone at one of the press conferences asks Kodi if it scared him, being in The Road.

Not really. He looks over at Viggo for a long moment, then gets back to the question.

I talked about it with my Dad. We looked it up- I looked it up on the internet, and read about it, and we talked about it. I'd already-

This time he looks out into the audience, where his father and mother are sitting in the back.

I'd already played the son, you know, in Romulus my Father- he turns to Viggo again, and says, sotto voce I'm playing sons of men who've lost their minds over love, aren't I? Viggo lays a hand on Kodi's arm for a moment and smiles, then Kodi comes back to the question again, this moment's leave just between them- I'd already played the son, he repeats himself, and I had - there's this scene where Romulus- where my Father has to beat me, and that was scary, but we just worked it through, and it was ok.

So we did that here, I did that here- read the book with my Dad, and we talked it over, me and him, and then we talked with John - John Hillcoat- and then when I read with Viggo, I just knew- I knew he'd- I knew that he'd take care of me. That we could do this together.

So, no, I guess I have to say, being in The Road- it was a lot of work. But it wasn't scary. Not like that.

It's the longest answer he's given yet at one of these things, and as soon as he's done he wants to duck behind Viggo's back for a moment, but instead he picks up his glass of water and sips from it, smiling when Viggo does the same, their movements economical, mirrored, comforting. Kodi's Dad watches them from the back, catching Viggo's eye and nodding once, smiles too.
