There are weekends Kodi's family takes him off for a couple of days. He feels funny getting all cleaned up when Viggo's staying pretty much in character, but Viggo sends him off with "Take notes. Enjoy all of it. Come back full," and Kodi does just about that each time.

Viggo, on the other hand, eats his small meals of meat and chocolate, drinks with the crew or alone, and misses his men. He tries not to miss them too much- The Man doesn't have the luxury of missing someone, because he can't afford to fall away from The Boy- but sometimes Viggo wakes, startled, and reaches for Karl, for Orlando, and when they're not there, either of them, he puts his head back down and stares into the night until his eyes close against it and he can dream his way to colour and sound and warmth.

Kodi brings him back silly things. A fisherman bobble-head from a truck stop; a red-and-blue soccer-style ball on a clip, the kind of thing you put on your backpack as the school year goes along. Viggo adds each one to the little shelf he's putting together for this filming, this journey. Each one makes him smile.

Each one makes the nights a little less dark.

Each one reminds him, in its own ridiculous way, why the fire matters.

He tucks the soccer ball in his pocket, then takes it out again. The man wouldn't have that in his pocket, so Viggo won't take it in his own- but he taps the bobble-head as he leaves, and it nods after him, smiling its painted smile, representing a loose-jointed ease that any man would want his son to inherit: a sense that it's all right to relax, at least for a little bit.
