The little AU: Interludes & whispers: Long awaited party

They take picnic, the dogs, and Viggo's old truck, and head north east into the hills.

Not nearly so round nor so green as Hobbiton's hills, still they are round and green enough to make camping comfortable. This is the upside of having friends who have friends who own private campgrounds: a safe place, wild enough to be interesting, near enough to be accessible, far enough away that privacy's not an issue.

There will be no epic movie watching, no reading from the trilogy, no round of phone calls or text messaging to celebrate these birthdays, this Equinox. No sorrowful travels, no joyous reunions, no unsettling sense of the world shifting nor relief that the seasons follow once more their rounds.

No, there will be nothing to mark this one way or the other, besides three very happy, very relaxed men, "Enough food for 10 hobbits!" as Orlando says, and "Beer enough for 100," as Karl replies. Viggo will note that the pipeweed is exceptionally good, and blow smoke-rings (though no ships) out over the watershed, careful that no sparks get away from him in these not-quite-so-green hills.

There will be more story-telling, and dogs who whuff out the boundaries of the camp, peeing here and there to lay down scent against big cats and so on (who find the occasional human visitors more annoying than interesting, but the dogs won't know that), protecting their men under the stars and the sliver of new moon and the bowl of the sky.

And in the morning, as sleeping bags are unzipped from one another and cookware put away and the firepit carefully checked to be sure the last ember is out, there will be lazy smiles and rocking hugs and Karl, wrapped in Viggo, with Orlando kissing the two of them, and the world will turn and the seasons shift, and Bilbo's birthday await another year's celebration in honor of friendship, and love.
