Karl is (though he'll deny it to the death) sentimental about Viggo. So, when he's in a store looking for something for Hunter and sees a small carry-about water colour set, he buys it. Later, when he has a chance, he sneaks it into Viggo's suitcase, tucked into an inner pocket with a note.

Gave Orli the pencils, you know, and thought you might find this amusing. Fun. Anyway, I love you. K In his swooping hand, tucked under the ribbon tied around the kit.

Viggo finds it in Toronto, smiles, unties it, reads the note, and smiles more broadly.

It's small, but complete: plenty of colours, a brush, a pencil and eraser, and paper- proper water colour paper, too. The tray has mixing wells, and there's even a little primer about wet and dry strokes, how to make them, and what they produce.

It's actually been a long time since he worked in water colours, and Viggo's surprised at how shy he is, for a moment, opening the pad, wetting the brush, taking a bit of colour from a tube and playing with it in the well.

But then training and instinct take over, and without any preliminary pencil work he's made a series of dry lines- a horse, running.

When it's finished, which doesn't take long, he puts all the kit away except for the picture, which he carefully sets aside until he can find an envelope that will fit it.

Viggo would deny it to the end. But he's sentimental about Karl.
