appearance. Standing at a rather impressive height of approximately 6’1”, Zack’s appearance can be considered relatively normal as far as Final Fantasy characters go. He is fairly slender but well-toned, and holds himself with a very laid-back and casual air. His facial features are rather sharp; though any severity that may normally be associated with such a trait is almost constantly marred by his frequent smiles and overly-expressive nature. Zack’s complexion is lightly tanned; his skin is nowhere near dark enough to be considered as olive but he’s not exactly pale either, just a natural, healthy tone. It should also be noted that Zack has a rather obvious, t-shaped scar across his left cheek-a souvenir from his last encounter with his mentor, Angeal Hewley.
Zack’s hair is black and naturally spiky, worn in long, scruffy layers at the back of his neck. In his youth, he had rather puppyish bangs, however certain events in his life prompted him to ‘grow up’ a little bit and he started slicking the majority of his hair back, save for a few strands that defiantly fall into his face. His most striking feature however, is most definitely his eyes. Like all other members of SOLDIER, Zack’s naturally blue eyes glow rather abnormally as a result of the mako enhancements to his body. Once they were likely a dark indigo but as a result of the chemicals in his system, they now appear azure in colour, glowing slightly green in the right kind of light. His eyes are also very intense and emotive, making it very easy to judge his mood and thoughts.
strengths. As the youngest First Class SOLDIER to grace Shinra’s ranks since Sephiroth himself, Zack is certainly not one to be lacking in admirable qualities. Naturally outgoing and downright charming, Zack is very much the type of person who is easily liked by almost everyone he meets. His self-confidence and genuinely cheerful personality makes forming friendships completely effortless for him, regardless of whether the other person is initially willing to be befriended or not.
Despite his position within the military, Zack absolutely abhors violence and values life above all else, thus he will do anything in his power to preserve it-even at the cost of his own life. He is fiercely loyal to those he considers his friends or comrades, which in turn makes him a valuable ally to have. His strength and bravery knows no bounds when it comes to protecting people or doing his duty, even if the latter goes against his orders or personal feelings.
Regardless of his high-spirited personality, Zack is surprisingly a determined and hard working individual when he puts his mind to it. He is fortunate to be one of those people who appear to always have luck on their side, and thus he is often able to achieve well under any circumstance. Brimming with youthful enthusiasm, Zack is more often than not a cheerful person and unwaveringly optimistic. He is kind, honest and generally just a really good guy in every sense.
weaknesses. As enthusiastic as he is, Zack has a rather unfortunate flair for trouble, and a knack for getting himself into it both on and off the field. His abilities and strength as a SOLDIER often makes him appear overconfident, and he was particularly susceptible to bouts of playful cockiness in his youth. Zack is prone to relying on his uncanny luck to get him through the sticky spots, which-when combined with his confidence-tends to leaves him acting recklessly and making hasty decisions, especially in combat.
For someone usually very laidback in nature, Zack has a surprisingly bad temper under the right situation. He is easily angered by acts of betrayal or pointless violence, even more so when the latter is directed at his friends, comrades or innocent bystanders. He can also be unreasonably stubborn in his views and is somewhat prone to feeling guilty over his actions when forced to go against morals or feelings.
In his youth, Zack was admittedly rather ditzy, and whilst the years may have cured him of his childish innocence, he still seems to be lacking a little in the area of common sense. He is far too trusting for his own good, preferring to give even his enemies the benefit of the doubt before jumping headlong into acts of violence. Above all, Zack suffers from an undeniable hero complex that, in the end, will be his downfall...
background. Zack Fair was born in Gongaga; a small village located in the southern tropics and situated almost directly east of the well-renowned Cosmo Canyon. He grew up as an only child and a somewhat energetic one at that, making it almost inevitable that he grow bored with country life by the time he had reached his early teens. It was this boredom that soon became the very reason why Zack ran away from his hometown to the more exciting city of Midgar in order to enlist within the military.
Surprisingly, Zack was promoted to the elite forces of SOLDIER almost immediately after signing up and was promptly assigned to the tutelage of SOLDIER 1st Class, Angeal Hewley. He rose quickly through the ranks, achieving a promotion to SOLDIER 2nd Class at just sixteen years of age, making him one of the youngest SOLDIERs of such a rank since Sephiroth himself. Zack's career only went upwards from here, and it was a mission to Wutai at age seventeen, followed by another to Banora that saw him consequently promoted once again to the rank of SOLDIER 1st Class where he began working alongside the infamous Sephiroth on numerous missions.
One such assignment however, was to be the end of Zack’s career within the military, but unfortunately not his life as a part of the Shinra Company. The fateful incidents of the Nibelheim mission saw Zack and a young trooper by the name of Cloud Strife mortally wounded by the madman that the war-hero Sephiroth had become, leaving them with no means to fight or protest as they were claimed as specimens for experimentation by Professor Hojo, the head of Shinra’s science department.
The next four years or so were filled with nothing but painful physical and mental torture for the pair, which came almost daily in the form of Hojo’s cruel and inhumane experiments. There was little chance of them ever being freed, and yet somehow Zack managed to break both of them out of the underground labs and proceeded to travel with and protect the comatose Cloud for a year as they struggled to return to Midgar, whilst being hunted by troopers and Turks alike. It was here, with their destination literally in sight, that the pair was ambushed on the cliffs just miles outside of the city and left for dead.
