It took a while for Becker to come to.  The last thing he remembered was dinner.  Since asking for a divorce, he’d preferred to eat alone, the strained atmosphere that accompanied every meal causing him to lose his appetite.  It was hard having to live with his wife until they’d made alternative arrangements, but at least they’d managed to remain ( Read more... )

The problem is that woman-on-man violence and woman-on-children abuse is swept under the carpet, brushed aside, that there is an attitude that if it happens to a man, he should just harden up, he wasn't being man enough, or, in this case, he deserved it because he had a penis and penises are funnier than breasts. Stating that violence aimed towards men tends to be either between equals or criminals ignores the reality of what goes on out there - and also ignores the fact that the proportion of female child abusers is far greater than is recognised or acknowledged - and who has greater control over food and shelter than a mother? Certainly of my parents, my father was emotionally abusive, but my mother was the one who would pick up my brother and throw him against a wall or beat me with a stick. The nature of abuse may vary among the genders but abuse is abuse, whichever way you cut it.

It is hard to get a conviction when you are raped and you're a woman; it's even harder when you're a man. The first conviction involving a raped man was in 1995 in the UK - that's not even 20 years ago. You are more likely to be raped in prison if you are a man - let's say you're sent down for a relatively minor crime, does that mean you were asking to be raped (because hey - shouldn't have got himself locked up)? Or deserve it?

As far as domestic violence is concerned, men and women abuse each other at roughly the same rate; however, in England and Wales, there are 7,500 refuge places for women vs 60 for men. Men. Not criminals. Men in abusive relationships who just don't get anywhere near the same level of support or justice as the less than ideal level women get.

It's not that I disagree with your points so much as they demonstrate just how much violence aimed at men is misunderstood or ignored or brushed off. If we were to remove gender from the equation and stop assuming that the man is automatically to blame and simply offer support where needed, we would move a lot closer to the fair and just society those pushing for equality claim to want.
