February Recs - ASoIaF/GoT

Mar 03, 2016 15:14

Ok, ok, so it's not February anymore, I know, but just shhhh. I'm only a fewww days behind.

Anyway, this batch of recs is for the ASOIAF/Game of Thrones fandom. (Mostly ASOIAF really...) Fics are het, slash and femslash. Ratings vary. Please always check fic headers and tags for warnings.

The Sun Ascendant by Burning_Nightingale (Gerris Drinkwater/Quentyn Martell)
My OTP in this fandom <3 I loved the imagery here and the subtle loyalty kink. The hints of ship and the obvious friendship, while still having all those strings of social ranks and duty attached, is painful and yet lovely. I loved the politics interwoven with all this as well.

Mud Will Nourish You by snack_size (Gerris Drinkwater/Quentyn Martell)
AU where Quent lives/doesn't get burned (well, a bit but nothing critical), which is already great because...like...my baby... And the hurt/comfort! Quent is perfectly awkward and sweet and I loved Gerris' POV here and how he's all like second-hand offended by Daenerys not giving Quent a chance. This is the sort of fic that definitely plays to certain id-spots, but it does that well!

a temporary insanity cured by marriage by leapylion3 (Daenerys Targaryen/Quentyn Martell, Daenerys Targaryen/Daario Naharis)
An exploration of what might have happened if Daenery's had married Quent after all with a focus on their relationship. I think this fic does a brilliant job with characterization and it's a very believable AU.

On The Way by mautadite (Oberyn Martell/Willas Tyrell)
This is such a lovely opposites-attract fic. It's interesting to read through it and to spot the ways in which they find common ground and what they appreciate about each other. This is one of those quiet fics which still manages to be a "feel good thing" without actually being fluff per se.

She burns like the Sun by ygrainette (Arianne Martell/Tyene Sand)
I don't really read these characters (or this ship) so this was an interesting experience! And I'm glad I chose this for my first fic of them because it was so wonderfully sensual. The sexual interactions are explicit but really well done where they manage to be interesting just on an aesthetic/character level even if you're not much into porn. I also enjoyed the "childhood friendship" aspect of this relationship/fic and thought it added an nice fullness to the picture. And just...every bit of this very evocative and just makes sense.
