War and Peace recs <3

Oct 16, 2014 03:30

Recs! I haven't done any recs in a loooong time. I've been compiling a bit of a list, however, so I hope to start doing them again :) But I DO want to rec some awesome War and Peace stuff right now, which I should have recced a really long time ago, but didn't. WELL. Doing it now :)
(BTW...that awkward moment when you go into a fandom tag on AO3 and see there are 42 works in it, and wonder how there could possibly be that many. Then you remember you wrote 30 of them. lol. Story of my life.) Anyway:

Debut (1847 words) by evelyn_b
Rating: Not Rated (I'd put it at PG, maybe PG-13 if you're conservative)
Warnings: [none, really]
Characters: Elena Vasilyevna Kuragina, Anatole Vasilyevich Kuragin
Additional Tags: Pre-Canon
Summary: Everything changed the last year Elena was allowed to swim. A very short story about Helene Kuragina. Mild woobification; contains no slash.

This AMAZING character study was a gift for yours truly. Helene and Anatole are adorable here. Anatole is, for once, gorgeously in character. Helene's early puberty and sexual awaking are so wonderfully described here. Her confusion, her isolation because no one in her family deigns to explain things to her, the scrutiny she receives from everyone, how her too-rapid transition from child to woman is both encouraged and kinda-shamed by everyone around her. She's not exactly my young!Helene here but she's very real and the roots of her later self, the cool and imperious young woman who carries her sexuality and gender both as a shield and a sword are so well explored here. And I loved how Vasili Kuragin is almost, but not quite called out on his manipulative-ness toward Helene by Anatole - that it's, ironically, Anatole-the-future-womanizer who sees and dislikes his father's approach and worries about Helene's safety and honor. I just love how well-written and thoughtful this fic is.

young one, look at me (1627 words) by MousselineSerieuse
Rating: Not Rated (I'd say PG)
Warnings: None
Characters: Nikolai Ilyitch Rostov, Marya Nikolayevna Bolkonskaya, Natalya Ilyinichna Rostova, Pyotr Kirillovich Bezukhov, Andrei Nikolayevich Bolkonsky, NextGen characters, Marya Petrovna Bezukhova, Natalya Nikolayevna Rostova, Nikolai Andreyevich Bolkonsky, Andrei Nikolayevich Rostov, Pyotr Petrovich Bezukhov
Additional Tags: Next Generation, Family Dynamics, Future Fic
Summary: History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme. Or, the War and Peace protagonists and their namesakes.

I just love the idea of War and Peace NextGen fic. This isn't at all how I imagine the NextGen in my headcanon, but it only makes the fic that much more interesting to me. I like how this fic grapples with what happens to Pierre and Natasha's children if/when Pierre becomes a Decembrist and is subsequently exiled. I like all the parallels the fic draws between the NextGen kids and their parents/relatives. The whole thing is just wonderfully entertaining.

Untitled Fanart by Tamimio (PG)
So, apparently Tumblr is the black hole that has everything. Including a Dolokhov tag. There isn't much at all on it, sadly, but there is this very lovely Dolokhov/Pierre fan art. (I'm assuming this is the scene where Dolokhov tries to make amends with Pierre before the Battle of Borodino.)

PS: speaking of Tumblr, is there actually any way to get the link of the speficic post you're looking at when you find posts through doing a tag search? Because I can't seem to figure it out

character: pierre bezukhov, character: helene kuragin, gen, fanart, slash, recs, nextgen (war & peace), character: anatole kuragin, character: theodore dolokhov, fandom: war and peace, fanfic
