Sonnet: Josef's Decision

Author's note: I guess the Muse decided that Josef deserves a chance to respond, because this one was waiting for me when I woke up this morning.

Josef's Decision

My friend, for years I've watched you fight your fate,
Bemoan your situation, strive to keep
Your memory of humanity's frail state
Above all thoughts, while waking or asleep.

And now, when you have finally attained
Your heart's most fervently pursued desire,
You ask me to erase the joy you've gained,
You beg me to destroy it as your sire.

You offer me your neck in true submission.
How can you trust me, knowing what you know?
How can I be the means of this transition?
What if you don't return from where you go?

This favor that you ask of me, my brother,
Will end one friendship and begin another.
